Battered, Broken, and Shamed

A Turbulent Political Journey

The political career of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya East, Naa Koryoo, has been marked by a series of controversies and challenges. Her time in office, less than a year, has been anything but smooth. The journey to her position in Parliament was clouded by a fabricated narrative involving imaginary firearms-wielding assailants, which created a storm of speculation and concern.

This fabricated story nearly led to a crisis that could have had serious implications for the country. However, divine intervention is believed to have averted potential disaster. As the narrative began to take shape, it seemed as though it would secure her place in Parliament. But the Interior Minister’s report shattered this illusion, revealing the truth behind the claims.

Alhaji Mubarak Muntaka, a respected figure from Zongo, known for his unwavering commitment to truth and principles, played a pivotal role in this situation. His integrity and adherence to faith are well-known, and he did not allow political affiliations to influence his actions. Many were surprised that he did not alter the contents of the report on the 2024 election violence, a move that a typical NDC politician might have made.

Following the embarrassment caused by the Interior Minister’s report, Naa Koryoo responded with a press conference filled with anger but lacking substance. This response exposed her vulnerabilities and called the bluff of a seasoned politician. The MP, now crestfallen, has initiated a battle she is unlikely to win, one that she will likely regret. She ignored the wisdom of letting sleeping dogs lie, and now faces the consequences of her actions.

The Kasoa thugs responsible for the attacks on Ms. Hawa Koomson during the Ablekuma North incidents cannot protect Naa Koryoo from the repercussions if the Interior Minister decides to retaliate. Known for his maturity and measured approach, the Interior Minister is more likely to let her struggle with the aftermath of her own misjudgments. As a novice in the political arena, Naa Koryoo has much to learn if she hopes for another term. She has already disappointed her party supporters, who have downgraded her rating.

Her press conference, delivered in a slangish and pedantic style, failed to achieve its intended objective of undermining the Interior Minister’s report. Instead, it exposed her vulnerabilities to public ridicule. She did not deny the alarming picture she painted of election day, in a futile attempt to discredit the findings prepared by professional security personnel.

To be fair, given the magnitude of her humiliation, she could not have remained silent without attempting some form of rebuttal, however ineffective. Naa Koryoo has faced numerous challenges, and one can only urge the Interior Minister to ignore her tantrums, which are little more than face-saving gimmicks from a political newcomer.

Her credibility suffered further when the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) exposed her unworthiness of a PhD, a humiliation that alone might have warranted resignation from the dignified House of Parliament. As if fate were intent on undermining her, she has now been presented to the Ghanaian public as someone who rode on mendacity to earn a seat in Parliament.
