Cameroonian Opposition Leader Tchiroma Possibly in Nigeria

Cameroonian Opposition Leader’s Whereabouts Remain Uncertain

The whereabouts of Issa Tchiroma Bakary, a prominent Cameroonian opposition leader, remain unclear as he is believed to be in Nigeria. According to reports from Africa Intelligence, Tchiroma was last seen in Adamawa state. However, a reliable source informed Daily Trust that he had since moved to Abuja. As of Wednesday night, the newspaper was unable to confirm whether he was still in the Nigerian capital.

Tchiroma was reportedly taken from his residence in Garoua on the night of 28–29 October. A post on his ‘Tchiroma 2025’ Facebook account dated 31 October stated, “I thank the loyalist army, which has shown its patriotism by escorting me to a safe location and is currently ensuring my protection.” The statement suggests that Tchiroma was relocated across the border into Nigeria to avoid potential raids that could escalate tensions.

There have been several incidents indicating attempts to apprehend Tchiroma. On the morning of 29 October, gendarmes stormed his quarters. Security personnel guarding his compound and other nearby residences reported hearing gunshots around Tchiroma’s residence that day.

This incident occurred just a day after the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, warned during a press briefing in Yaoundé that Tchiroma would face consequences for inciting “post-election violence.” Tchiroma had previously urged his supporters to take to the streets the day before the election results were announced.

Atanga Nji had also criticized Tchiroma for declaring himself the winner of the presidential election the day after the vote. This act, according to the minister, is reserved for the Constitutional Council, which is responsible for officially announcing election results.

Security Concerns and Escalating Tensions

The security situation surrounding Tchiroma has raised concerns about the safety of opposition figures in Cameroon. His movement across the border into Nigeria highlights the risks faced by political dissidents in the country. While the exact location of Tchiroma remains uncertain, his presence in Nigeria underscores the broader political instability following the recent presidential election.

The Nigeria Immigration Service has not provided any confirmation regarding Tchiroma’s status or whereabouts. A spokesman for the service, Sherrif Akinlabi, did not respond to an inquiry sent to his phone number. This lack of communication has further fueled speculation about Tchiroma’s current location.

Political Implications

The events surrounding Tchiroma’s escape and the government’s response reflect the deepening divide within Cameroonian politics. The ruling party, led by President Paul Biya, has maintained a firm stance against any challenges to its authority. Meanwhile, opposition leaders like Tchiroma continue to push for greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

The controversy over Tchiroma’s declaration of victory has sparked debates about the role of the Constitutional Council and the legal framework governing elections in Cameroon. Critics argue that the council should have been given more autonomy to ensure fair and transparent procedures, while the government maintains that it is upholding the rule of law.

International Reactions

While the international community has largely remained silent on the issue, human rights organizations have expressed concern over the treatment of political activists in Cameroon. Reports of alleged abuses and arbitrary arrests have drawn attention to the need for greater protections for opposition figures and civil society members.

As the situation continues to unfold, the focus remains on Tchiroma’s safety and the broader implications for democracy in Cameroon. The coming days may provide further clarity on his whereabouts and the direction of the country’s political landscape.
