Couple’s Bodies Rescue Teen When Roller Coaster Belt Fails

A Life-Saving Act at an Amusement Park

A dramatic incident unfolded at a U.S. amusement park when a safety belt on a roller coaster became loose during operation, but the story of how passengers in front prevented a fall has captured public attention.

The event took place on the 11th of last month at the “World of Fun” amusement park in Kansas City, Missouri. A teenage girl’s safety belt on the roller coaster ‘Mamma’ came undone while the ride was ascending the first 60-meter hill. The situation quickly escalated, but thanks to the quick actions of those nearby, the outcome was ultimately positive.

Chris Evins, 44, and Cathy Evins, 33, the couple seated in front, were the first to notice the problem after hearing the girl’s screams. Cathy recalled, “A girl behind my husband shouted, ‘The safety belt is loose,’” adding, “(When I looked back) the belt was about a foot away from the girl.”

The couple immediately sprang into action, holding the girl with all their might until the roller coaster came to a stop to prevent her from falling. According to the park, the ride accelerates up to 121 km/h during its steep drop. Their bravery was crucial in ensuring the girl’s safety.

The couple reportedly calmed the frightened girl. Chris, who previously worked as an emergency medical technician, told the Washington Post he said to her, “We’ve got you. You can make it. Just hold on a little longer.” His experience proved invaluable in the tense moment.

Their desperate efforts were captured on camera, which was recording passengers’ expressions at the time. The photo shows Cathy holding the girl’s legs with her right arm while turning around, and Chris embracing the girl’s left arm with his left arm. These images have since gone viral, highlighting the couple’s selfless act.

Fortunately, the couple and the girl arrived safely at the boarding area and reported the incident to the park. The park temporarily suspended operations of the roller coaster and conducted a thorough inspection. Subsequent investigations by the Missouri Department of Public Safety revealed that about 20 of the 36 safety belts installed on the ride were defective and required replacement.

After the news spread, the Evins couple became hailed as “heroes” online. Responding to the attention, Chris said, “I’m glad we could help, but it’s regrettable that such a situation occurred.” The couple also told the Washington Post they plan to push for legislation mandating the public disclosure of amusement ride safety inspection results.
