Dangote Fertiliser Joins German Partner to Launch 4 Lekki Production Units

Strategic Partnership Between Thyssenkrupp Uhde and Dangote Fertiliser

Thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology (UFT), a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Uhde, has formed a strategic partnership with Dangote Fertiliser Limited (DFL) to license its advanced UFT Fluid Bed Granulation Technology. This agreement will support the development of four new urea granulation units in Nigeria, marking a significant step forward in the country’s fertilizer production capabilities.

The collaboration includes the licensing of the technology, the provision of a comprehensive Process Design Package (PDP), and the supply of proprietary equipment such as granulators and scrubbers. These elements are essential for ensuring that the new facilities meet the highest standards of efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Each of the four units will have a nameplate capacity of 4,235 metric tons per day. This expansion is expected to increase DFL’s annual urea granule production from approximately 2.65 million tons to over 8 million tons. The new facilities will be located in Lekki, close to DFL’s existing fertilizer complexes, which have been using UFT technology since 2021 and produce 3,850 metric tons per day each.

Environmental and Technological Advancements

The new facilities will incorporate UFT’s energy-efficient scrubbing system, designed to minimize pressure drop while effectively controlling dust and ammonia emissions. This system ensures compliance with stringent environmental standards, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices.

Additionally, the plants will feature the Ammonia Convert Technology (ACT), which integrates ammonium sulfate byproducts into the urea granules. This innovation eliminates waste streams and provides logistical and commercial advantages, further enhancing the sustainability of the production process.

Vision for Sustainable Industrial Development

Nadja Haakansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “This partnership with Dangote Fertiliser Limited underscores our shared vision for sustainable industrial development and global food security. By deploying our proven UFT® Fluid Bed Granulation Technology, we are setting new standards in efficiency and environmental stewardship in fertilizer production. We are proud to support DFL in building resilient and future-ready value chains.”

Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote Group, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “We are pleased to deepen our collaboration with thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology for the expansion of our fertilizer operations in Lekki. This initiative reflects our commitment to agricultural self-sufficiency and industrial progress across Africa. With UFT technology, we are ensuring the production of high-quality urea fertilizer that meets global standards while reducing environmental impact. This investment further positions Nigeria as a leading fertilizer producer.”

Industry Leadership and Global Impact

Dangote Fertiliser Limited is one of Africa’s largest fertilizer producers, dedicated to enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting food security across the continent. Thyssenkrupp Uhde’s UFT® Fluid Bed Granulation Technology is recognized globally as one of the most advanced solutions for producing urea granules.

Currently, over 70% of the world’s urea granule output is produced using this technology, contributing significantly to the global food supply while maintaining emissions well below regulatory limits. This partnership between DFL and UFT is a testament to the potential of innovative technologies to drive sustainable growth and meet the increasing demand for fertilizers in emerging markets.

Key Components of the Agreement

  • Technology Licensing: The agreement includes the licensing of UFT Fluid Bed Granulation Technology.
  • Process Design Package (PDP): A comprehensive PDP is provided to ensure efficient and effective plant design.
  • Proprietary Equipment: Supply of key equipment such as granulators and scrubbers to support the production process.
  • Environmental Compliance: Incorporation of energy-efficient systems to reduce emissions and meet environmental standards.
