Denmark Launches Campaign Against Urban Obesity

A New Initiative for Healthier Urban Living in Bangkok

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the Danish Embassy, and Novo Nordisk Pharma Thailand have joined forces to promote healthier urban lifestyles and tackle the growing issue of obesity. This collaboration is part of the “Bangkok, City for Better Health” initiative, which aims to improve public health outcomes across the city.

The partnership was officially launched during a signing ceremony held at the Danish Ambassador’s Residence. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt highlighted the significance of this agreement, calling it a new chapter in the cooperation between Thailand and Denmark on public health issues. He emphasized that the initiative reflects the city’s long-term commitment to enhancing the well-being of its residents.

Obesity has become a major concern in Bangkok, with 58% of the population affected—far exceeding the national average of 40%. The initiative seeks to address this challenge by focusing on the prevention and management of obesity and related non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and chronic kidney disease.

The joint program is built on three core pillars:

  • Childhood Obesity Curriculum: Introducing a comprehensive curriculum in BMA schools to educate children about healthy eating habits and physical activity.
  • Recreational Spaces Development: Creating dedicated areas in Lumpini and Benchakitti parks for activities like pickleball and strength training, encouraging more active lifestyles.
  • Healthy School Lunches: Ensuring that children receive nutritious meals through improved school lunch programs, promoting better dietary choices from an early age.

Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that this partnership could significantly uplift the livelihood of Bangkok residents. He noted that the initiative is not only about improving health but also about fostering a culture of wellness that benefits the entire community.

Danish Ambassador Danny Annan expressed his support for the collaboration, calling it a demonstration of the enduring partnership between Denmark and Thailand. He added that the initiative goes beyond knowledge exchange, embodying a shared vision for healthier city living.

This partnership highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing global health challenges. By combining resources, expertise, and innovative approaches, Bangkok, Denmark, and Novo Nordisk are working together to create a healthier future for the city’s residents.
