Fazl Warns Against Amending Article 243 via 27th Amendment

Political Leaders Voice Concerns Over Constitutional Amendments

Political leaders from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) have raised concerns about potential changes to the country’s constitution, particularly focusing on Article 243. The party’s chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has issued a clear warning that any modifications undermining democratic principles would not be tolerated.

At a recent press conference, Maulana Fazl expressed his stance on the ongoing discussions surrounding the 27th Amendment. He stated, “No draft of the proposed 27th Amendment has been made public so far, so we cannot comment on it at this stage.” This remark highlights the lack of transparency in the process and underscores the need for clarity before any decisions are made.

Maulana Fazl also pointed out that during the 26th Constitutional Amendment, the government had removed 35 clauses. He emphasized that reintroducing any of these clauses in the upcoming 27th Amendment would be seen as a violation of constitutional integrity. “Including any of these in the 27th Amendment would amount to disrespecting the Constitution,” he said.

The leader further stressed the importance of the 18th Amendment, which significantly enhanced the powers of the provinces. “Any attempt to reduce these powers would face strong opposition,” he asserted. JUI-F, according to Maulana Fazl, is committed to ensuring that provinces receive more authority rather than having their rights diminished. “Provincial powers can be expanded, but reduction is unacceptable,” he added.

Emphasis on Natural Governance

Maulana Fazl also highlighted the need for a natural governance system. He explained that during the 26th Amendment, all parliamentary parties were in constant communication. “Society cannot accept an unnatural system; natural governance must prevail,” he said. This statement reflects the party’s broader vision for a transparent and inclusive political framework.

The leader reiterated JUI-F’s position on constitutional safeguards and provincial rights. He believes that any changes to the constitution should be made with the best interests of the people in mind. “We advocate for a system that is fair, just, and reflective of the diverse needs of the population,” he concluded.

Key Points from the Press Conference

  • Transparency Concerns: The lack of a publicly available draft for the 27th Amendment has raised questions about the process.
  • Constitutional Integrity: Any return of clauses removed during the 26th Amendment could be seen as disrespectful to the Constitution.
  • Provincial Rights: The 18th Amendment strengthened provincial powers, and any attempts to reduce these would meet resistance.
  • Natural Governance: The emphasis on a natural system aligns with the party’s vision for inclusive and fair governance.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s statements reflect the growing concerns among political leaders regarding the direction of constitutional reforms. As the debate continues, the focus remains on ensuring that any amendments uphold democratic values and protect the rights of all citizens. The role of political parties in shaping these reforms will be crucial in determining the future of governance in the country.
