Four Injured in Sokoto Community Bandit Attack

Armed Bandits Attack Isa Town, Injuring Four Residents

In the early hours of Monday, armed bandits launched a violent attack on Isa town, the headquarters of Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State. According to reports, the assailants stormed the town around 1 a.m., opening fire and injuring four residents who are currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

Isa, located in the eastern part of Sokoto, has long been a target for banditry and other forms of criminal activity. The recent incident has once again raised concerns about the safety and security of the community.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the events that unfolded during the attack. “They entered the town from the eastern axis, behind the residence of Sarkin Gobir Isa, and began shooting indiscriminately,” he said. “Four people sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the hospital.”

The resident also expressed gratitude for the quick response from security forces deployed in the area. However, he pointed out that the situation could have been far worse without their intervention.

He attributed the recent surge in attacks to a peace accord reportedly signed between some communities in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, and the bandits. “Since the peace deal was signed, the bandits have redirected their attacks to our communities. They have stopped us from harvesting our crops,” he lamented.

The resident shared a personal account of the impact of the violence on his family. “Just yesterday (Sunday), they abducted my elder brother who went to the stream to fetch sand. Initially, they asked us to pay whatever we could afford, and we managed to raise ?1 million, but they rejected it. They are now demanding ?6 million, which we cannot afford.”

Despite the growing tension, the spokesman of the Sokoto Police Command could not be reached for a comment at the time of this report.

Recent Attacks Highlight Escalating Violence

Monday’s attack in Isa came just days after a similar incident in Kurawa village, located in the neighboring Sabon Birni Local Government Area. Gunmen attacked the village around midnight last Thursday, killing three people, including the acting village head, Hussaini Alhaji Yawalle.

The attackers breached part of the community’s perimeter fence before launching the assault. A local source described the events: “We received a call from nearby villages that armed bandits were advancing toward us. We quickly alerted the authorities, but they broke through the fence and started shooting.”

The attack lasted less than 30 minutes, unlike previous incidents that often lasted for hours. Despite the resistance from vigilantes and community guards, supported by security personnel, the bandits managed to cause significant damage.

According to Islamic rites, three residents were killed and buried the same day. The attack has left the community in a state of fear and uncertainty.

Ongoing Threats and Community Resilience

The latest attacks have heightened fears among residents of eastern Sokoto, where communities continue to suffer from recurring bandit violence despite increased security measures.

Residents have reported a growing sense of vulnerability as attacks become more frequent and unpredictable. The lack of a long-term solution to the bandit problem has left many feeling helpless and exposed.

While security forces have made efforts to protect the region, the persistent threat of violence continues to disrupt daily life. Farmers, in particular, have been affected, with many unable to access their fields due to the ongoing instability.

As the situation remains tense, the community is calling for stronger interventions and more effective strategies to combat the rising tide of violence.
