When Irish President Michael D Higgins first took office in 2011, he made his deep affection for dogs a well-known part of his public persona. Higgins welcomed his first dog, Shadow, a Bernese Mountain Dog, followed by Síoda and Bród. Among these, Misneach is the only one who remains at Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of the Irish president. As Higgins prepares to step down, Misneach is enjoying his final days in the presidential home.
On Instagram, Higgins shared a heartfelt message: “Misneach and friends – including Rosie, Luna, Rollo and Teddy – have been enjoying his final few weeks in Áras an Uachtaráin.” The post captured the emotional farewell that many are preparing for, as the new president, Catherine Connolly, takes over today.
The name “Misneach” translates to “courage” in Irish, a fitting title for a dog who has become a symbol of loyalty and companionship. Throughout his time in the presidential residence, Misneach has been seen by the side of his master during numerous official engagements. He has greeted, sniffed, and even licked business leaders and political figures from around the world, becoming a beloved figure in his own right.
Higgins once remarked about his canine companions: “The dogs are not merely ice-breakers, they’re also a great source of wisdom.” This sentiment reflects the deep bond between the president and his pets, who have often provided comfort and camaraderie during both formal and informal occasions.
Misneach’s role as a loyal companion has led to some memorable moments. During one of Higgins’ speeches, he was spotted licking and nibbling his master’s hands, a moment that went viral on social media. His late brother, Bród, also had his share of fame, meeting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Prince William and Kate, and even barking at former President Joe Biden.
As Misneach prepares for his retirement, he received a proper send-off. Other Bernese Mountain dogs lined up to bid him farewell as he and Higgins drove away from the presidential residence. The event marked the end of an era for those who have grown fond of the president’s faithful companion.
Reports indicate that Misneach has already moved to his new home in Galway, where Higgins will reside after completing his term. Well-wishers expressed their emotions on Instagram, with one comment reading: “Aw, we’ll miss Misneach’s beautiful face, but he’s done the state some service and deserves a break.” Another wrote: “We’ll miss you, Misneach. Please ask your mum and dad to keep posting photos of you’re adventures so we can still see you.”
The incoming president, Connolly, is said to have two cats that will accompany her into the presidential home. While Misneach will no longer be able to run through the fields of Áras, it is clear that he will enjoy a peaceful and loving retirement with his devoted owner.
