User Reactions to KakaoTalk’s Friends Tab Redesign
A recent survey has revealed that a significant majority of KakaoTalk users are experiencing fatigue due to the platform’s redesign of the ‘Friends’ tab. The redesign, which was implemented on September 23 of last year, transformed the existing Friends list format into a post-based interface similar to Instagram. According to an online survey conducted by the Korea Press Foundation from the 29th of last month to the 2nd among 1,000 individuals aged 20–60 with KakaoTalk usage experience, 90.1% of respondents felt fatigued because they were required to see news they did not want to know.
The new design has also led to a sense of burden for many users. 90.9% of respondents indicated that they feel burdened because their activities could be exposed to people they are not close with. Furthermore, 79.7% of KakaoTalk users expressed a desire to revert to the version before the Friends tab redesign.

Mixed Reactions to New Features
While the majority of users have shown dissatisfaction with the redesign, some have found it beneficial. 20.9% of respondents said, “It’s convenient because I can communicate with heart reactions or comments on friends’ news,” and 20.5% responded, “It’s convenient because I can check friends’ recent updates at a glance.”
In addition to the Friends tab redesign, the integration of AI features such as ChatGPT into KakaoTalk has also drawn mixed reactions. 86.1% of respondents found the AI features complicated and confusing due to the inclusion of too many functions. However, 61.2% of respondents viewed the application of AI in KakaoTalk as a natural phenomenon considering the evolving media environment. Additionally, 38.1% of users believed that AI integration made the app more convenient.
Enhanced Message Deletion Feature
Another notable change in KakaoTalk is the extension of the message deletion time in chat rooms from 5 minutes to 24 hours. This update has been met with positive feedback from users. 84.3% of respondents found the feature reassuring because it provides more room to correct mistakes. Moreover, 80.6% of users reacted positively, stating that strengthening the deletion feature in messengers is a natural progression.
Conclusion
The survey highlights the complex relationship between users and the continuous evolution of KakaoTalk. While some features are appreciated, others have caused frustration and discomfort. As the platform continues to introduce new functionalities, it remains crucial for developers to balance innovation with user preferences to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for all.
