Kano Legislator Abandons NNPP, Joins APC

Political Shift in Kano: A Representative Joins the APC

Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, the member representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has made a significant political move by defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). His decision marks a clear endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign for a second term. This shift came after a large gathering of supporters in his hometown of Kofa, Bebeji, where he received a warm welcome from thousands of constituents.

Jibrin expressed his gratitude to Allah for the reception and emphasized that his supporters had resolved to leave the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)/Kwankwasiyya movement and join the APC. He stated that this decision was made with the aim of supporting President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

In addition to the homecoming event, Jibrin mentioned that over 2,000 clerics from his constituency held special prayers for President Tinubu, as well as for peace and development in Kiru/Bebeji and Kano State. This act highlighted the deep connection between the local community and the national political landscape.

Tensions Within the NNPP

Jibrin’s defection follows months of internal strife within the NNPP. The situation escalated in September when he was expelled by the Kwankwasiyya-led faction of the party. The faction, led by Kano State Chairman Hashim Dungurawa, accused him of engaging in anti-party activities and failing to pay mandatory party dues—claims that Jibrin denied.

Dungurawa justified the expulsion by citing Jibrin’s public criticisms of the party and his association with political opponents. He asserted that Jibrin had no value to add to the party. However, another faction of the NNPP, led by Senator Jibrin Doguwa, rejected the expulsion, labeling it as “illegal and politically motivated.”

This internal conflict exposed growing divisions within the party, creating a chaotic environment that has drawn attention from both local and national media. The situation has become a focal point for discussions about the future direction of the NNPP and its ability to maintain unity.

Background of Jibrin Kofa

Before joining the NNPP in 2022 under the Kwankwasiyya structure, Jibrin served as the Director-General of the Tinubu Support Groups. His previous role placed him at the center of Tinubu’s political network, which may have influenced his decision to align with the APC.

In recent weeks, Jibrin has shown signs of dissatisfaction with the party’s direction, leading to speculation about his next steps. His formal declaration on Sunday marked a turning point, as he became the latest high-profile politician to abandon the NNPP amid a shifting political landscape.

Implications for the 2027 Elections

With the 2027 elections approaching, the political realignment is becoming increasingly fluid. Jibrin’s defection reflects a broader trend of politicians reassessing their allegiances in response to changing dynamics within their parties and the wider political environment.

The move also highlights the importance of regional support in national politics, particularly in states like Kano, where the influence of local leaders can significantly impact electoral outcomes. As more politicians consider their options, the competition for votes and support is expected to intensify.
