NBR introduces online VAT refund system for transparency and efficiency

Introduction to the New Online VAT Refund Module

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched a new Online VAT Refund Module aimed at streamlining the process of applying for and receiving Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds. This initiative is designed to make the entire process more efficient, transparent, and fully digital, marking a significant step forward in modernizing tax administration in Bangladesh.

Key Features of the Online VAT Refund System

The system allows VAT-registered taxpayers to apply for refunds, have their claims processed, and receive the due amounts directly into their bank accounts through the Bangladesh Electronic Fund Transfer Network (BEFTN). This eliminates the need for physical visits to VAT offices, saving time and reducing administrative burdens on both taxpayers and officials.

The new module is integrated with the existing Integrated VAT Administration System (iVAS) and linked to the Finance Division’s iBAS++ platform. This integration ensures seamless data flow and enhances the accuracy of refund processing.

Once a refund is approved by the relevant VAT Commissionerate after necessary verification under VAT laws, the amount will be automatically transferred to the taxpayer’s designated bank account. This automation reduces the potential for errors and delays, ensuring faster service delivery.

Benefits of the Online Refund System

According to NBR officials, this initiative is expected to significantly reduce the time and cost previously required for taxpayers to submit refund applications in person and collect refund cheques manually. The online refund system is also anticipated to enhance transparency, strengthen compliance, and improve overall efficiency in tax administration.

However, it is important to note that taxpayers with pending refund claims submitted earlier either online or in hard copy will now need to reapply using Form VAT-9.1 through the iVAS portal. This step ensures that all refund claims are processed through the updated system, maintaining consistency and fairness.

Training and Support for Officials

To facilitate the smooth implementation of the new system, training programmes have already been conducted for officials and staff of all VAT Commissionerates. These sessions aim to familiarize personnel with the new module, ensuring they can provide accurate and efficient support to taxpayers.

Taxpayers are advised to contact their respective VAT offices for necessary guidance and support regarding online refund applications. This includes assistance with form submission, understanding the refund process, and resolving any technical issues that may arise.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Online VAT Refund Module represents a major advancement in the digitization of tax processes in Bangladesh. By leveraging technology, the NBR is not only improving the efficiency of refund procedures but also enhancing the overall experience for taxpayers. As the system becomes fully operational, it is expected to contribute to a more transparent and compliant tax environment, benefiting both the government and the business community.
