New HK$20 Ferry Links Central and West Kowloon – Pets and Bikes Allowed

A new cross-harbour ferry service has launched, connecting Central Pier 8 with the West Kowloon Cultural District. This development marks a significant step in improving accessibility to one of Hong Kong’s key cultural hubs.

The service underwent a four-day trial run starting on Monday, with a launch ceremony scheduled for Friday. Public operations are set to begin on Saturday, offering residents and visitors an efficient way to travel between the two areas.

The ferries are equipped with air-conditioning, making the journey comfortable for passengers. Bicycles and pets are also welcome on board, which is a positive feature for families and pet owners. The cost for a single ticket is HK$20, with the same price applying for each pet. Concessionary fares, available for eligible passengers, will be priced at HK$10. Monthly passes are offered at HK$560, providing a cost-effective option for frequent users.

The estimated travel time between the two locations is around eight minutes, significantly reducing the previous journey time. This improvement is expected to enhance the overall experience for those visiting the area.

According to a press release from the West Kowloon Cultural District on Friday, the new route will complement the district’s efforts to create “distinctive dining facilities along the waterfront.” The initiative aims to transform WestK Quay into a vibrant harbourfront, offering visitors a rich cultural and leisure experience.

The ferry service is operated by Fortune Ferry Company Limited, ensuring regular and reliable transportation. Departures will occur every 30 minutes from both Central Pier 8 and West Kowloon. The service will operate from 8am to 10pm on Mondays through Fridays, and until 11pm on weekends and public holidays. The last departures will be from West Kowloon, allowing for extended hours during peak times.

To celebrate the launch, the operator has announced that a total of 3,000 complimentary single-ride tickets for adults and 500 for pets will be distributed on Monday. These tickets will be available on a first-come-first-served basis at WestK Quay and Central Pier No. 8, starting at 8am.

The West Kowloon Cultural District has long struggled with inadequate transport links, forcing visitors to walk for 10 to 15 minutes from Kowloon MTR Station. The introduction of this ferry route provides a direct and convenient connection to Hong Kong Island, potentially boosting foot traffic and supporting the district’s growth as a cultural destination.
