NSCDC arrests three contractors for damaging TCN power infrastructure

Arrest of Contractors for Vandalizing Power Infrastructure

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun State has taken decisive action by arresting three contractors suspected of stealing and damaging critical power transmission equipment. The incident involved vital components belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) at the Osogbo Substation.

According to a statement released by the NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer, Kehinde Adeleke, the suspects were apprehended for allegedly engaging in activities that threatened the stability of power transmission operations. The three individuals, identified as Adigwe (52), Bomi (39), and Seyi (42), are employees of contracting firms that have been working with TCN in Osogbo, Osun State.

Details of the Incident

The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Igbalawole Sotiyo, confirmed that the suspects were arrested on November 1, 2025, while dismantling three 132KV DS contact isolators. These components were stored in a container designated for tools and materials at the TCN Osogbo Substation.

Sotiyo explained that during a discreet investigation, it was discovered that five out of eighteen DS contact isolators had been dismantled by the suspects. One of the accused, Adigwe, who serves as a supervisor for one of the contracting firms, admitted that his team tampered with the DS contacts without proper authorization from TCN.

Unauthorized Actions and Consequences

The commandant emphasized that the actions of the suspects were carried out without the presence or approval of a valid TCN permit holder. He described the act as unauthorized interference with critical national infrastructure, which poses a significant threat to public utilities and energy security.

Furthermore, Sotiyo noted that all three suspects were found in possession of three of the eighteen DS contact isolators that belong to TCN. The NSCDC is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.

Once the investigation is complete, the suspects will be charged in court according to existing laws that protect critical national assets and infrastructure. This legal action underscores the importance of safeguarding essential systems that support the country’s energy grid.

Commitment to Protecting National Infrastructure

The NSCDC commandant reiterated the Corps’ commitment to protecting national infrastructure and public utilities across Osun State. He called on individuals, contractors, and organizations to refrain from any activities that could compromise public assets. Sotiyo stressed that anyone caught engaging in such acts would face the full consequences of the law.

This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by the NSCDC to ensure the security of critical infrastructure. It also serves as a warning to others who might consider tampering with or vandalizing public utilities. The incident demonstrates the need for vigilance and adherence to legal protocols when dealing with sensitive equipment and facilities.

Conclusion

The arrest of these three contractors marks a significant step in the fight against the theft and sabotage of critical power infrastructure. It reflects the determination of the NSCDC to uphold the integrity of national assets and maintain the reliability of essential services. As the investigation continues, further details may emerge, but the message remains clear: unauthorized interference with public infrastructure will not be tolerated.
