Oyo Goes Digital with Building Survey Approval

Introduction to the New Digital Building Plan Approval System

The Oyo State Government has taken a significant step forward by introducing a new digital system for building and survey plan approval. This initiative aims to streamline the process of obtaining construction permits, making it more efficient, transparent, and secure. The announcement was made during a meeting with all zonal directors of town planning offices in the state, held at the Ministry Conference Room.

Key Features of the Digital System

The Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Williams Akin-Funmilayo, highlighted that the new system represents a major advancement in urban management and infrastructural regulation. He emphasized that the digital process would eliminate the inefficiencies and irregularities associated with manual operations. By implementing a fully automated system, the government hopes to ensure transparency and traceability in every stage of the approval process.

One of the key innovations in the system is the use of a barcode that generates and validates every approved document. This feature ensures that each approval is unique and can be easily tracked. Akin-Funmilayo stated that this move will put an end to the traditional methods of handling approvals, which often involved delays and potential corruption.

Commitment to Modernization and Compliance

Akin-Funmilayo stressed that the current administration is committed to modernizing the town planning process and ensuring strict compliance with planning laws. He urged the task forces and enforcement departments within the Physical Planning division to intensify their monitoring efforts and take action against any developers or individuals who violate planning regulations.

The commissioner also reiterated the government’s determination to protect lives and properties through adherence to approved construction standards. He assured citizens that the new digital system would allow them to apply for and process building approvals from anywhere in the world, saving time and eliminating the need for intermediaries or backdoor dealings.

Encouraging Public Support and Participation

To ensure the success of the new system, Akin-Funmilayo called on all property owners to support the state government by following the new procedures. He assured them that the system would be user-friendly and free from corruption. This initiative is expected to foster trust between the government and the public, promoting a culture of accountability and transparency.

Previous Initiatives and Future Goals

In 2024, the state government launched a 60-day online building permit amnesty program. This initiative aimed to regularize buildings constructed without proper government approval. Akin-Funmilayo explained that the program would not only address existing violations but also process new approvals within the 60-day window.

This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance urban planning and infrastructure development across Oyo State. By combining digital innovation with strict regulatory measures, the government is laying the foundation for sustainable growth and improved quality of life for residents.

Conclusion

The introduction of the new digital building plan approval system marks a turning point in the way urban planning and construction are managed in Oyo State. With a focus on efficiency, transparency, and compliance, the government is setting a new standard for modern governance. As the system is rolled out, it is expected to bring about positive changes that benefit both the public and private sectors.
