Pakistani coloured gemstones are gaining significant traction in the Chinese jewellery market, with a growing number of consumers showing interest in high-quality gems such as rubies and sapphires. This shift is particularly noticeable among younger generations, who are increasingly turning to these vibrant stones for weddings and personal collections. The trend reflects a broader transformation in the Chinese jewellery industry, which is becoming more diverse and sophisticated.

Winza, a company that has long focused on the Chinese market, has expanded its operations significantly. It now operates five branded stores and three offices across major cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. According to reports, this expansion highlights the potential for Pakistan’s gemstone products to thrive in one of the world’s largest consumer markets.

Economic Growth and Consumer Demand

China’s economic growth has played a crucial role in shaping this market shift. With per capita GDP surpassing US$13,000, there is a growing demand for high-quality and personalized goods. This trend aligns with the goals set by the 2024 Central Economic Work Conference, which emphasized boosting consumption and improving investment efficiency for 2025. These policy directions were further reinforced in the Proposals for the 15th Five-Year Plan, which highlighted the importance of promoting consumption as part of building a strong domestic market and fostering a new development pattern.

The continued expansion of China’s consumer market is evident in events like the China International Import Expo (CIIE), where international businesses showcase their products. The CIIE has become a vital platform for understanding the dynamics of the Chinese market. For many overseas enterprises, the focus has shifted from whether to enter the market to how to deepen engagement with local consumers.

Strategic Shifts in Global Brands

Multinational brands are leveraging the CIIE to unveil innovative products and build brand awareness. Their strategies have evolved from simply expanding distribution channels to gaining a deeper understanding of regional consumer habits. This approach drives product iteration and localization, ensuring that offerings align with market demands and growth opportunities.

In the fresh food supply chain, companies like Good Farmer Group have made notable contributions. As a leader in the industry, Good Farmer Group regularly participates in the CIIE, showcasing new products such as organic Peruvian blueberries. Jiang Lei, the company’s China e-commerce manager, highlighted the importance of global supply chains and the company’s understanding of Chinese consumer trends.

“Health and safety are top priorities for today’s consumers, and they are increasingly favoring high-quality fruits,” said Jiang. “They are looking for products that offer better taste and more reliable quality, in pursuit of a higher ‘value-for-money’ ratio.”

Infrastructure and Market Expansion

Infrastructure projects are playing a key role in facilitating the movement of high-quality imported goods. The Chancay Port, part of the China-Peru Belt and Road initiative, has significantly reduced shipping time between China and Peru to just 23 days, while also cutting logistics costs by over 20%. These improvements are helping to meet the growing demand for premium products in China.

As the Chinese market continues to evolve, it presents new opportunities for international businesses to establish a stronger presence. The combination of economic growth, evolving consumer preferences, and improved infrastructure is creating a favorable environment for global brands to thrive.
