Community Concerns Over Infrastructure and Employment in Akwa Ibom State
Residents of Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim, and Obot Akara Federal constituency in Akwa Ibom State have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of roads in their area. The community highlighted the poor state of the road network, which has led to significant challenges in daily life. In addition to the infrastructure issues, they also raised concerns about the lack of electricity and high levels of youth unemployment.
During a recent event known as the “Peoples Assembly,” organized by Yiaga Africa with support from the European Union, local residents gathered in Ikot Ekpene to voice their grievances to Hon. Patrick Umoh, their federal lawmaker. The assembly provided a platform for people from various local government areas within the constituency to share their experiences and concerns.
The participants lamented the loss of lives due to unsafe road conditions, economic hardships caused by inadequate infrastructure, and the increased security risks that come with poorly maintained roads. They urged the legislature to include the construction and maintenance of the road network in the budget for the upcoming year. Furthermore, they called on the executive branch to ensure that these projects are properly implemented.
Despite acknowledging the efforts of Hon. Patrick Umoh in securing employment opportunities for some individuals, the community emphasized that more needs to be done to address the issue of youth unemployment. Many young graduates remain without jobs, and the people requested initiatives such as skills training and grant-based empowerment programs for youths, women, and people with disabilities.
In his address, Olaniyan Sanusi, the Program Officer at Yiaga Africa, explained the purpose of the Peoples Assembly. He stated that the event aimed to bring lawmakers and government officials closer to the people, enabling them to understand their needs and develop policies that are more responsive to the community’s requirements.
Sanusi also noted that while the government may not be able to fulfill all the demands of the people immediately, it is crucial for the community to prioritize their concerns before presenting them to their representatives. He encouraged the residents to follow up on the implementation of any agreements or commitments made during the assembly.
