A New Form of Street Crime in Dhaka
In a surprising and clever development, a group known as the ‘Salam Party’ has been committing a series of muggings in the Rajarbagh Police Lines area. This crime is happening right under the noses of law enforcement agencies, raising concerns about security in the region.
The gang’s method is both simple and deceptive. One member approaches a victim—often someone walking on the footpath or traveling in a rickshaw—with a friendly greeting of “Salam.” When the person looks up, the stranger smiles and says, “Bhai, you don’t recognize me? I’m [so-and-so]!” This initial interaction lulls the victim into a false sense of trust before the situation takes a dangerous turn.
On Sunday around noon, the gang carried out another attack. Ridwan, a private service worker, was traveling from Fakirerpool to Malibagh crossing via Shahjahanpur Crossing by rickshaw. As he passed the Police Liberation War Museum near Rajarbagh Police Lines, a man on the footpath greeted him warmly. Confused but polite, Ridwan looked over only to be surrounded moments later.
Before he could react, the gang signaled the rickshaw to stop and threatened him at gunpoint. They took Tk 15,000 from his pocket and then proceeded to rob several other pedestrians nearby. Witnesses reported that between four to five men were involved in the quick and well-coordinated robbery before they fled the scene without any difficulty.
Ridwan later contacted the national emergency helpline 999 to report the incident. The police assured him that a patrol team would arrive at the location. However, many locals feel that such incidents have become increasingly common outside the boundary wall of the Rajarbagh Police Lines, especially near the Liberation War Museum area.
Residents are urging authorities to enhance vigilance and conduct more night patrols to tackle the growing problem posed by this deceptive gang. The ‘Salam Party’ has managed to exploit the trust of unsuspecting individuals, making it a serious threat to public safety in the region.
How the Gang Operates
- Initial Greeting: The gang uses a friendly “Salam” to approach victims.
- False Recognition: They claim to know the victim, creating a sense of familiarity.
- Surprise Attack: Once the victim is distracted, the gang surrounds them and threatens them with guns.
- Quick Escape: After robbing the victim, the gang quickly flees the scene, often leaving little evidence behind.
Community Response
Local residents have expressed their frustration with the increasing number of attacks. They believe that the police need to take more proactive measures to prevent such crimes. Some suggestions include:
- Increasing the number of patrols in high-risk areas
- Installing more surveillance cameras around the museum and police lines
- Educating the public on how to identify and respond to suspicious behavior
Despite these efforts, the ‘Salam Party’ continues to operate with relative ease, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive approach to community safety.
What Can Be Done?
To combat this growing threat, the following steps can be taken:
- Enhancing communication between local communities and police departments
- Encouraging citizens to report any suspicious activity immediately
- Implementing stricter penalties for those caught committing such crimes
- Launching awareness campaigns to educate people about the tactics used by the gang
By working together, the community and law enforcement can create a safer environment for everyone. The ‘Salam Party’ may be cunning, but with increased vigilance and cooperation, their activities can be curtailed.
