Sonal Resigns as Madhesh Chief Minister After Vote Loss

Resignation of Madhesh Province Chief Minister

On November 8, Nepal, the Chief Minister of Madhesh Province, Jitendra Sonal, submitted his resignation to Province Chief Sumitra Bhandari Subedi. This decision came after he realized that he would not be able to secure a vote of confidence in the Provincial Assembly.

Sonal visited the Office of the Province Chief on Saturday evening and officially handed in his resignation. Earlier that day, he had announced his intention to step down during a meeting of the Provincial Assembly. The move was a direct response to the lack of support from within the coalition government.

Background of the Resignation

The Chief Minister had planned to seek a vote of confidence in the same session. However, he anticipated that he would not receive enough support and chose to resign before the vote could take place. In a 107-member Provincial Assembly, a minimum of 54 votes is required to secure a majority.

Several key figures were absent during the meeting, which contributed to the lack of support for Sonal. Former Chief Ministers Satish Kumar Singh and Tribhuwan Shah, both affiliated with the Janamat Party, were notably missing. Their absence weakened the coalition’s position.

Composition of the Ruling Coalition

The ruling coalition in the Madhesh Provincial Assembly consists of several political parties:

  • Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) – 8 seats
  • Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal – 18 seats
  • Janamat Party – 13 seats
  • CPN (Maoist Centre) – 9 seats
  • CPN (Unified Socialist) – 7 seats

Despite this composition, the coalition struggled to maintain unity. Bimala Ansari, a lawmaker from the JSP who had previously pledged her support, was also absent from the meeting. Additionally, Maoist Centre provincial lawmakers Rahbar Ansari and Mala Rai openly defied the government during the assembly meeting, further undermining the coalition’s efforts.

Impact of the Resignation

The resignation of Chief Minister Sonal marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Madhesh Province. It highlights the challenges faced by the ruling coalition in maintaining stability and unity. The absence of key members and the open rebellion of some lawmakers have left the government in a vulnerable position.

This event has sparked discussions about the future of the coalition government and the potential for new leadership. The next steps will likely involve negotiations among the remaining members to determine the direction of the province’s governance.

Future Outlook

With the current situation, it remains uncertain whether the coalition can regain its strength or if new alliances will form. The political dynamics in Madhesh Province are expected to evolve as the focus shifts towards securing a stable majority and ensuring effective governance.
