New Agreement Allows South Korean Drivers to Obtain Kansas License Without Testing
South Korean citizens who have obtained a driver’s license in their home country can now receive a driver’s license in the U.S. state of Kansas without undergoing additional testing. This development marks a significant step in simplifying the process for drivers looking to operate vehicles in the United States.
The Korean National Police Agency announced on the 11th that it signed a mutual agreement with Kansas State on the 10th at 11 a.m., local time, regarding this matter. The agreement enables South Korean drivers to obtain a Kansas Class C Standard license, which is similar to South Korea’s Class 2 ordinary license. As a result, the total number of U.S. states recognizing South Korean driver’s licenses has increased to 29.
Starting from the 18th of this month, local residents in Kansas who hold a South Korean driver’s license will be able to obtain a Kansas ‘Class C Standard’ driver’s license without additional testing. This license allows individuals to drive standard passenger vehicles and is considered equivalent to the Class 2 ordinary license in South Korea. Additionally, foreigners holding a Kansas Class C Standard license will also be eligible to receive a Class 2 ordinary license in South Korea after only a fitness test, without the need for written or practical exams.
This agreement is expected to benefit South Korean business personnel and other residents in Kansas by making it easier for them to navigate the local transportation system. It also strengthens the relationship between South Korea and the United States by fostering greater convenience and cooperation.
Acting Commissioner Yoo Jae-sung of the Korean National Police Agency stated, “This agreement will contribute to enhancing the convenience of our business personnel in Kansas and strengthening friendly relations between the two countries.” His comments highlight the broader implications of the deal, not just for individual drivers but for the overall diplomatic and economic ties between the nations.
Key Benefits of the Agreement
- No Additional Testing Required: South Korean drivers can now obtain a Kansas Class C Standard license without needing to take any new tests, streamlining the process significantly.
- Equivalent Licensing Recognition: The Kansas Class C license is recognized as equivalent to South Korea’s Class 2 ordinary license, allowing for seamless recognition of driving credentials between the two countries.
- Simplified Process for South Koreans in Kansas: Foreigners residing in Kansas can now easily transition to a local license, reducing administrative hurdles.
- Fitness Test Only for South Korean License Holders: Those wishing to obtain a South Korean Class 2 license after holding a Kansas license will only need to pass a fitness test, eliminating the need for written or practical exams.
This agreement is part of a growing trend of international collaborations aimed at simplifying cross-border travel and residency. By removing unnecessary barriers, both South Korea and the United States are taking steps toward a more connected and efficient global transportation system.
As more U.S. states recognize foreign driver’s licenses, the process for international drivers becomes increasingly straightforward. This development in Kansas is a positive example of how such agreements can enhance mobility and support the needs of an increasingly globalized world.
