Airport Resumes Operations After Lighting System Malfunction
KATHMANDU, Nov. 7 – Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has resumed its regular operations after being closed for four hours due to a malfunction in its airfield lighting system. The issue, which started around 5:30 p.m., led to a complete halt of both takeoffs and landings, according to the airport director and spokesperson, Rinji Sherpa.
“The cause of the lighting failure is currently under investigation. We will determine the exact reason after conducting a detailed study,” Sherpa stated during a press briefing.
The disruption affected several international flights, which were forced to remain in the air while waiting for updates. Some of these flights were diverted to other airports, while domestic flights were grounded at TIA.
The airfield lighting system plays a crucial role in ensuring safe runway operations during nighttime. Without proper illumination, pilots cannot safely navigate the runway, making it a vital component of airport safety protocols. Following repairs to the system, normal flight activities have now been restored.
Impact on Air Travel
The closure of the airport caused significant disruptions for passengers and airlines alike. Many travelers faced delays or changes to their travel plans as flights were either held in the air or redirected to alternative destinations. Airlines had to manage the situation by rebooking passengers, adjusting schedules, and providing updates to those affected.
In addition to the operational challenges, the incident also raised concerns about the reliability of the airport’s infrastructure. As one of the busiest airports in the region, TIA handles a large volume of both domestic and international traffic. Any disruption can have far-reaching effects on the broader aviation network.
Airport officials have assured the public that the issue was isolated and that no long-term damage was done to the system. However, they have emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Steps Taken to Resolve the Issue
Upon identifying the problem, maintenance teams worked swiftly to address the malfunction. The repair process involved inspecting the electrical systems and replacing faulty components. Once the lighting system was restored, the airport was cleared for regular operations.
The airport’s management has also taken steps to communicate with airlines and passengers throughout the incident. Regular updates were provided to ensure transparency and minimize confusion among travelers.
Future Measures
In light of this event, the airport is expected to review its maintenance procedures and implement additional checks to ensure the reliability of critical systems. This may include more frequent inspections of the airfield lighting and other essential infrastructure.
The incident highlights the importance of maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency in airport operations. As air travel continues to grow, ensuring that all systems are functioning properly becomes even more critical.
With the issue resolved, TIA is now operating smoothly, and passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for any further updates or changes to their travel plans.
