Many Brits dream of leaving the fast-paced urban life behind and moving to the countryside or the coast. The idea of a slower pace, open fields, and salty air is enough to make anyone consider packing their bags and starting anew. According to a recent guide from Legal & General, there are several areas across the UK that offer ideal conditions for retirement.
The ranking evaluated 632 areas based on factors such as access to healthcare, opportunities for social connections, access to nature, local amenities, and financial security. Each area was given a score out of 100, reflecting its suitability for retirees.
Top-Ranked Areas for Retirement
The leafy market towns of Amersham and Chesham claimed the top spot with an overall score of 74 out of 100. These locations are well-known for their scenic beauty and have even served as backdrops for popular TV series like Midsomer Murders and the film Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Amersham and Chesham performed exceptionally well in terms of health, scoring 93. This reflects a high proportion of residents over 65 who are in good physical and mental health, along with strong access to general practitioners. Another Buckinghamshire location took second place with a score of 72.
Beaconsfield, located just a 25-minute train ride from London, secured the third position. Known for its picturesque Old Town and the world’s first model village, it scored impressively on health (91) and financial aspects (79). The remaining top spots were filled by areas in Surrey and West Sussex, with all but one of the top ten locations falling within these regions.
Coastal Options for Retirees
For those who prefer coastal living, Suffolk Coastal made it into the top ten. This area is known for its stunning coastline, which includes the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and wildlife-rich wetlands like Dunwich Heath. It scored 69 overall, with particularly high marks for social and community aspects (78).
Insights from L&G
Lorna Shah, Managing Director, Retail Retirement at L&G, shared her insights on the findings. She emphasized that retirement happiness is not determined by a single factor but rather by the combination of health, social connections, environment, and financial security.
She added: “Financial security is an enabler for many of the other measures, giving people the freedom to choose where and how they want to live in later life. Our research has shown that having enough set aside can greatly improve retirement wellbeing, and a guaranteed income through products such as an annuity can lessen anxiety and create a greater sense of certainty.”
