Rising Tensions in Tofa Over Arrests Linked to Social Media Post
Residents of Tofa Local Government Area in Kano State are increasingly concerned following the arrest of two members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). The incident has sparked discussions about freedom of expression and accountability within local governance. The two individuals, Murtala Garba Doka and Shamsu Safiyanu Lambu, also known as Shamzeet Lambu, were reportedly taken into custody on Monday by the council chairman, Ibrahim Yakubu Addis.
The arrests came after a Facebook post made by Shamzeet Lambu allegedly accused the chairman of abandoning a critical road construction project. The post, written in Hausa, stated: “240 Millions kudinmu a Burji Allah Ya Saka Mana Wlh,” which translates to “Our 240 million in Burji, may God reward us.” This statement is believed to have triggered the action against the two party members.
According to sources, the two were first detained at the Tofa Divisional Police Station before being transferred to the Kano State Police Command Headquarters in Bompai for further investigation. The allegations surrounding the road project have raised questions about the transparency and efficiency of local government operations.
Comrade Nazifi Ado Lambu, a youth leader in the area, confirmed the arrests and highlighted the growing tension among residents. He stated that the community was aware of the situation and expressed concerns over the implications of the arrests.
A resident of Lambu Ward, who wished to remain anonymous, shared his perspective on the matter. He mentioned that the community had long been advocating for the completion of the Lambu-Banki-Yarimawa-Jakata road project. The resident claimed that the council chairman had initially promised to construct the road with proper drainage and asphalt. However, after the state government approved the project at a cost of approximately 240 million naira, only clearing and sand filling were completed before the work ceased.
When contacted, the council chairman, Ibrahim Yakubu Addis, addressed the issue. He explained that he had ordered the arrests to investigate the claims made in the Facebook post. According to him, the project was awarded for less than 100 million naira by the governor, contrary to what the post suggested.
“I have family and relatives, and above all, the people are watching. Many would have believed them. They have done it before, and I allowed them, but they are doing it again. We just asked them to bring proof,” he said.
This incident has brought to light the challenges faced by local communities in holding their leaders accountable. It also raises important questions about the role of social media in shaping public discourse and the potential consequences of challenging authority.
As the investigation continues, the residents of Tofa remain watchful, hoping for clarity and justice. The situation underscores the need for transparent communication between local leaders and the communities they serve.
