Updated: Pro-Wike Group Seizes PDP Headquarters

Political Turmoil in PDP as Factions Clash Over Leadership

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently facing a significant internal crisis, with factions led by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Umar Damagum, the leader of the National Working Committee (NWC), locked in a power struggle. The conflict has escalated to the point where the Wike faction has taken control of Wadata Plaza, the PDP’s National Headquarters.

This move comes after a series of suspensions and retaliatory actions within the party. The NWC, under Damagum’s leadership, had suspended Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary, and other officials who were perceived as loyal to Wike. In response, the Wike faction suspended Damagum and other key party members, appointing Muhammed Abdulrahman as acting chairman.

A New Leader Steps In

Muhammed Abdulrahman addressed journalists at the PDP office in the FCT on Monday, announcing his decision to move to the party headquarters. He expressed concern over the current state of the party, highlighting its decline from a ruling party for 16 years to an opposition force for over a decade. He pointed to the “unexplainable” defections of governors, legislators, and council chairmen as a major factor in this downfall.

“I have accepted to become Acting National Chairman at this difficult time through the mercy of God and instrumentality of very critical stakeholders of this party,” he said. His goal, he emphasized, was to heal the party’s wounds, end factionalization, reposition the party, and ensure it becomes law-abiding.

Tensions Emerge at the Headquarters

As Mohammed took control of the secretariat, tensions flared between the two factions. Damagum supporters were seen at the party headquarters, but the police intervened to prevent any potential clashes. Daily Trust reported that at least 10 Hilux vans of the police were stationed around the secretariat.

Eventually, Mohammed successfully took over the secretariat and held the first meeting with Anyanwu and others in attendance. This marked a significant shift in the power dynamics within the PDP.

The Path Forward

With the party in disarray, the coming days will be crucial in determining the direction of the PDP. The new acting chairman faces the daunting task of uniting the party and restoring its former glory. However, the challenges ahead are immense, given the deep-rooted divisions and the need to rebuild trust among members.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on how the PDP navigates this period of uncertainty. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for the party’s future and its role in Nigerian politics.
