Leadership and Healthcare Initiatives in Agege Local Government Area
The leadership of the Agege Local Government Area has recently taken a significant step towards improving public health. The newly appointed Chairman, AbdulGaniyu Obasa, has made community healthcare a top priority for his administration. This commitment comes after the previous chairman, Tunde Azeez, stepped down from his position.
AbdulGaniyu, who is the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, assumed the role of council leadership last week. His vision for the local government includes ensuring that quality healthcare services are available to all residents across the seven wards and 36 zones that make up Agege.
In a recent statement, AbdulGaniyu emphasized the importance of healthcare in the area. He highlighted that the local government is determined to bring healthcare services to every corner of the community. “Healthcare is a big focus for us, and we want to ensure healthcare reaches every one of them,” he said.
According to the chairman, the most pressing health issues in the area include hypertension, stroke, diabetes, malaria, and low immunization rates. To tackle these challenges, the council has initiated the establishment of health booths in each of the 36 zones. So far, 10 out of the planned 36 booths have been set up, with the remaining ones expected to be completed by December.
These health booths will provide essential services such as blood pressure and blood sugar checks, as well as basic malaria treatment. The initiative aims to make healthcare more accessible to residents, allowing them to receive medical attention without having to travel far from their homes.
Improving Maternity Care and Emergency Services
One of the key areas of focus for the council is improving maternity care. AbdulGaniyu explained that the primary health centre and maternity facility nearby have been upgraded to address the challenges faced by expectant mothers. He noted that many women struggle to afford emergency procedures like Caesarean sections, which can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly.
“We’re now working on solutions to make such emergency care more affordable and immediate,” he said. To this end, the council is collaborating with health officers and community leaders to create a system that allows for quick intervention. A support scheme is being developed to subsidize emergency procedures for indigent mothers, especially those who register at public facilities.
The goal is to ensure that no woman loses her life or her baby due to financial constraints. “No woman should lose her life or her baby because she couldn’t afford an urgent medical procedure,” AbdulGaniyu added.
Collaborative Efforts for Sustainable Healthcare
The success of the healthcare program relies heavily on collaboration with local doctors, volunteers, and health officers. These professionals move from one zone to another, sometimes using mobile clinics to reach remote areas. This approach ensures that the program remains sustainable and effective.
AbdulGaniyu shared that in some areas, over 5,000 residents have already been screened. “It’s not just about treatment — it’s about prevention and early detection,” he said. By focusing on preventive care, the council hopes to reduce the burden of chronic diseases and improve overall public health outcomes.
Conclusion
The initiatives undertaken by the Agege Local Government Area under the leadership of AbdulGaniyu Obasa represent a significant step forward in addressing the healthcare needs of the community. Through the establishment of health booths, improved maternity care, and collaborative efforts with healthcare professionals, the council is working to ensure that every resident has access to quality healthcare services.
