A court in Rajshahi has handed down a life sentence to a headmaster of a high school for the rape of an SSC examinee following her abduction over three years ago in Natore. The case, which has drawn significant public attention, highlights the severity of crimes against women and children in the region.
The Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Md Mahiduzzaman also sentenced the accused to 14 years in prison for the charge of abduction. This decision was announced by the court’s public prosecutor, Munshi Abul Kalam Azad. The convict, Firoz Ahmed, is the headmaster of Mariam Memorial Girls’ School in Natore.
According to the prosecutor, the victim was standing near the main gate of the school after completing her practical exam on October 1, 2022. At that time, the teacher approached her and took her to a relative’s house in Rajshahi under the pretense of offering assistance to improve her performance in the practical exam.
Once at the relative’s house, the victim was confined there against her will. She was subjected to repeated sexual assault, with the accused threatening to kill her if she disclosed the incident. These threats left the victim in a state of fear and helplessness.
On the same night, the victim’s mother filed a case against three individuals, including the teacher, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. The allegations were serious, and the authorities took swift action.
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion arrested the accused shortly after the incident and handed him over to the police. The police then pressed charges against the trio involved in the case. However, during the process of framing charges, two of the accused were acquitted.
