Governor Recognizes Athletes’ Achievements at National Sports Festival

The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has recognized the achievements of athletes who brought home medals from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The governor awarded cash prizes to the athletes for their outstanding performances, highlighting their role as “true ambassadors and shining examples of Plateau’s resilience, excellence, and winning spirit.”

During a reception and award ceremony held at the New Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos, Governor Mutfwang praised the athletes for their contributions to the state’s reputation. He stated:

“Our athletes have once again proved that Plateau State remains the home of champions. You have brought pride and glory to our dear state through your outstanding performances. This is only the beginning of greater things to come.”

The event was attended by government officials, sports administrators, private sponsors, and jubilant athletes who celebrated the governor’s continued investment in sports development.

Financial Rewards for Medalists

The Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, shared details about the financial rewards given to the athletes. According to the statement, the governor announced the following:

  • ₦1 million for each gold medalist
  • ₦750,000 for each silver medalist
  • ₦500,000 for each bronze medalist in individual events
  • ₦5 million, ₦3 million, and ₦2 million respectively for team sports winners

This reward system reflects the administration’s commitment to recognizing and supporting athletic excellence.

Investment in Sports Infrastructure

Governor Mutfwang emphasized that his administration’s investment in sports is yielding tangible results. He outlined plans to reform structures, upgrade facilities, and improve athletes’ welfare. He noted that previously, some athletes had to borrow money to attend competitions, but this situation is now being addressed.

“Today, athletes receive their allowances and logistics support directly, without any interference. This government means business.”

He also revealed plans to transform the Plateau State Sports Council into a Sports Commission. This move aims to attract private investment and boost participation at both local and international levels.

“We are determined to make sports a strong pillar for youth empowerment, social cohesion, and economic growth,” the governor added.

Support from Team Captain and Sports Director

The team captain, Ayuba Kabiya, expressed gratitude to the governor for the full support provided, including transportation, allowances, and preparation for the festival.

“Your Excellency, the transformation we see in the stadium and sports administration today is a direct reflection of your visionary leadership,” Mr Kabiya said.

Ezra Gunen, the Director of Sports, commended the governor’s transparency and timely release of funds. He highlighted that for the first time, athletes received all their entitlements without delay.

“This marks a new era for sports in Plateau,” Gunen said.

The event was a celebration of the state’s progress in sports development. With renewed focus on infrastructure, athlete welfare, and private partnerships, Plateau is positioning itself as a leader in sporting excellence.
