New Aviation Training Program at Bugema University
Bugema University is set to make history by launching Uganda’s first-ever pilot training program, thanks to a partnership with Adventist World Aviation. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the country’s higher education and aviation sectors.
The Vice Chancellor of Bugema University, Prof Pr Masiko Kafeero, shared this exciting development during the university’s 31st graduation ceremony on November 9, 2025. The event saw the graduation of 1,780 students from 22 countries, highlighting the institution’s growing international appeal.
Prof Kafeero revealed that the university has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Adventist World Aviation. The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority has already visited the campus and recommended the construction of a runway. The university is currently processing government approval for this project.
In addition to the runway, Adventist World Aviation has donated a plane and a pilot to support the program. This collaboration is expected to open up new opportunities in aviation training, providing students with hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills.
Governance and Leadership in Higher Education
During the same ceremony, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) reiterated its call for all chartered universities in Uganda to strictly adhere to the management and governance structures outlined in their charters. NCHE Executive Director Prof Mary Okwakol emphasized the importance of the separation of powers among key university organs, including the University Board of Trustees, Chancellor, Senate, Council, and Administration Board.
“The Charter provides for key organs that include the University Board of Trustees, Chancellor, Senate, Council, and Administration Board, each with well-defined functions and powers, including that of the Chancellor,” Prof Okwakol stated.
She explained that the Chancellor serves as the ceremonial head of the university, presiding over all ceremonial assemblies, conferring degrees and academic distinctions, and promoting the institution nationally and internationally. The Vice Chancellor, on the other hand, heads the administration board of the university and is responsible for the academic, administrative, and financial affairs as specified in the university charter.
Prof Okwakol commended Bugema University for its contributions to Uganda’s higher education sector and its continued adherence to NCHE guidelines.
Inspiring Message to Graduates
Dr Kudakwashe Regimond Tagwirei, a philanthropist and founder of Bridging Gaps Foundation in Zimbabwe, delivered an inspirational message to the graduates. He urged them to focus on impact and innovation, emphasizing that learning is necessary but not sufficient.
“Learning is necessary but not sufficient. We must celebrate by making a difference on the ground. Be ready to add value to your own community and demonstrate your ability to always be a different person,” Dr Tagwirei said.
Leadership Changes at Bugema University
At the ceremony, Pr Samuel Kajoba was installed as the 7th Chancellor of Bugema University. He also serves as the Archbishop of the Seventh-day Adventist Uganda Union. Pr Kajoba assumed the role following his appointment in August 2025.
Bugema University, chartered in 2009, is a Seventh-day Adventist Church–founded institution located in Luweero District. Notably, Ms Sandra Nakiwala, a Nation Media Group journalist and NTV news anchor, was among this year’s graduates.
Looking Ahead
As Bugema University continues to grow and expand its programs, it remains committed to excellence in education and community service. The introduction of the pilot training program with Adventist World Aviation is just one example of the university’s dedication to innovation and progress.
