Nigeria Calls on Citizens to Stay Calm Amid Diplomatic Tension with the United States
The Nigerian federal government has called on citizens to remain calm and composed as diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and the United States continue to escalate. These tensions stem from recent remarks made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which have sparked concern among Nigerians and raised questions about the future of bilateral relations.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized this appeal during a courtesy visit to Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, in Dutse on Monday. According to a statement released by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, Idris reassured the public that President Bola Tinubu is well-equipped to manage any challenges that may arise.
“President Bola Tinubu has all it takes to secure Nigeria from destabilising elements, as well as mend any cracks in our nation’s relationship with our international friends and partners; as such, Nigerians should please remain calm,” Idris said during the visit.
During his trip to Jigawa State, Idris also participated in the North-West 2025 Youth Pally and presented the achievements of President Tinubu’s administration after two years in office. The event aimed to highlight the progress made in various sectors, including economic development, security, and youth empowerment.
Escalation of Tensions with the United States
The situation escalated last month when former U.S. President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to make alarming claims about religious persecution in Nigeria. He stated that Christianity in the country faces an “existential threat” from radical Islamist groups, claiming that “thousands of Christians are being killed.” In response, Trump designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”
He further insisted that the U.S. cannot stand by while such atrocities occur and pledged that his administration would be ready to protect Christian populations globally. Trump also urged members of Congress to investigate the situation and tasked key lawmakers, including Congressman Riley Moore, Chairman Tom Cole, and the House Appropriations Committee, to report back to him.
On November 1, Trump reportedly instructed the Pentagon to draw up “options for possible military measures” against terrorist groups in Nigeria, citing the need to protect Christian communities. This move was seen as a direct challenge to Nigeria’s sovereignty and raised concerns among the Nigerian public and leadership.
Reactions from the Nigerian Government
The Federal Government swiftly rejected these claims, with President Bola Tinubu reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to religious freedom and the protection of all faiths. The government emphasized that Nigeria is a multi-religious nation where people of all beliefs coexist peacefully.
In addition to the domestic response, the U.S. threats have drawn global attention. Countries such as China and Russia have reportedly expressed support for President Tinubu and urged Washington to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty. These developments highlight the growing complexity of international relations and the need for dialogue and mutual respect between nations.
