A Showcase of Contemporary Romanian Cinema
The Romanian Film Festival in Washington, D.C. is set to present an exciting lineup for its sixth edition, featuring six feature films and documentaries. Each film will be accompanied by introductions, post-screening discussions, and Q&A sessions, offering audiences a deeper insight into the stories being told.
Organized by the Embassy of Romania to the United States and the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, the festival will take place from November 13 to November 16 at AMC Georgetown 14. This event serves as a platform to highlight the richness and diversity of contemporary Romanian cinema.
Curated Selection Under “New Romanian Perspectives”
The selection of films, presented under the headline “New Romanian Perspectives,” is curated by film critic Mihai Fulger. This theme reflects the evolving narratives and artistic expressions emerging from Romania’s cinematic landscape. The program aims to showcase the creative power and vitality of Romanian filmmakers, providing a window into their unique storytelling techniques and cultural perspectives.
Special Guests and Interactive Sessions
The festival will also feature special guests, including actress Daniela Nane from “Comatogen” and director Tudor D. Popescu from “Nasty.” These industry professionals will engage with audiences during conversations and Q&A sessions following selected screenings. Additionally, director Teodora Ana Mihai from “Traffic” will connect with the public online, further expanding the reach of the festival.
Opening Film: “Traffic” – An Art Heist Drama
The festival will open with “Traffic,” an art heist drama written by Romanian auteur Cristian Mungiu and directed by Teodora Ana Mihai. The film stars Anamaria Vartolomei, Ionuț Niculae, and Rareș Andrici. It follows a group of Romanian immigrants in Belgium who decide to pull off a robbery that could change their lives forever. Inspired by the 2012 theft of paintings by Picasso, Monet, and Gauguin from a Dutch museum, “Traffic” is Romania’s submission for the 2026 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category.
