A 40-year-old man from Lusaka, Zambia, Elisha Silungwe, found himself in a difficult situation when his wife, Rebecca Maela, discovered messages on his phone that suggested he was involved with another woman. The messages, which were sent by a female contact, demanded an increased amount of money for a “round of sex.” This revelation led to a tense confrontation between the couple, highlighting deeper issues within their marriage.
Rebecca, a 30-year-old beauty therapist from Matero East, is currently pregnant and has been facing complications. She had access to her husband’s phone, which allowed her to come across the messages. According to reports, she found a text from a woman who was clearly upset about the way Elisha was treating her. The woman demanded that Elisha stop giving her “pocket change” and instead pay K300 per encounter, or risk never seeing her again.
Rebecca expressed her frustration with her husband, stating that he seems to have a “PhD in chasing anything in a skirt,” showing no regard for age, dignity, or commitment. She explained that four days prior, she had responded to one of the messages pretending to be her husband. The woman then began complaining that Elisha only called her when he wanted “good sex” and demanded payment for each encounter.
The situation became even more complicated when Rebecca pointed out that Elisha never pays bills on time, despite being able to afford the expensive “rounds” of sex. She also mentioned that the only thing he is good at is buying mealie-meal because he loves nshima. She added that Elisha has never financially supported her, not even providing her with money for hair or lotion. Despite her current pregnancy and health complications, she feels that he shows no concern for her well-being.
Rebecca shared a deeply troubling incident where Elisha once tried to rape her young sister while she was at work. This experience left her feeling exhausted and disillusioned with their marriage. She told the Matero Local Court that she has had enough of her husband’s behavior and is ready to end their marriage and move on with her life.
In his defense, Elisha denied any accusations of infidelity and refused to accept the dissolution of their marriage. He claimed that his wife is short-tempered and often tries to prove him wrong. He also stated that he does not know the girl Rebecca was talking about in the messages.
During the court proceedings, Senior Magistrate Lewis Mumba acknowledged Rebecca’s emotional state, noting that her pregnancy might be influencing her feelings. He reminded the couple of the true essence of marriage, emphasizing that it should bring happiness rather than misery. Although he did not conclude the matter immediately, he gave them a few days to attempt reconciliation. If nothing changes, he will consider granting them a divorce.
