Leadership and Ethical Governance in the African Democratic Congress
Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Governor of Kaduna State, has recently highlighted the party’s commitment to ethical governance as it prepares for the 2027 general elections. Speaking with newsmen on Saturday in Gusau, El-Rufai emphasized that ADC is dedicated to driving sustainable change in Nigeria.
He criticized the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that it has failed to deliver on its promises. “This is a government of deceitful, corruption, and insincerity,” he said. According to El-Rufai, the ADC constitution stands out among other political parties in Nigeria due to its unique emphasis on a code of ethics for leaders and candidates.
The Code of Ethics: A Pillar of ADC’s Vision
El-Rufai explained that the ADC constitution includes a vision for a comprehensive code of ethics. This code would apply not only to party leaders but also to those aspiring to hold positions under the party’s banner and individuals appointed to government roles once the party wins elections. “The leadership of the party is currently working on developing this code of ethics,” he stated.
According to him, every leader of the party will be required to sign this document. The code mandates that all leaders and elected officials engage exclusively in activities related to good governance. It explicitly prohibits the misuse of public funds, corruption, and bribery. “ADC can only allocate positions and appointments to those who are clean and free from corruption,” El-Rufai added.
Manifestos and Youth Representation
El-Rufai also highlighted that the ADC has more robust manifestos compared to other political parties. He mentioned that 40% of the positions within the party will be reserved for youths, reflecting the party’s commitment to inclusivity and future leadership development.
Addressing Internal Challenges
In addition to external challenges, El-Rufai warned ADC supporters about potential threats from within. He urged members to remain vigilant against those who might attempt to split the party. “The APC would not let you leave alone; be careful with imposters,” he cautioned.
Strengthening Party Structures
To reinforce unity and discipline, an ADC stakeholders meeting was organized in Zamfara State by the deputy national organizing secretary. The event aimed to bring together all members after the party leaders had harmonized the structures within the state. During the meeting, members were encouraged to register with the party and obtain their PVCs, with the message that “your vote is your weapon.”
Conclusion
As the ADC continues to build its foundation for the 2027 elections, the focus on ethical governance and internal cohesion appears to be central to its strategy. With a clear code of ethics, youth representation, and a strong emphasis on transparency, the party aims to differentiate itself from its competitors and offer a viable alternative to Nigerian voters.
