Vipers Continue Dominance in StarTimes Uganda Premier League
In a tightly contested match at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, defending champions Vipers secured another 1-0 victory over their rivals KCCA. This win further cements their status as the team to beat in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. Despite having played only two league matches, which is four fewer than most of their competitors, Vipers have already shown why they remain the benchmark for excellence.
The match was characterized by tactical discipline and moments of brilliance. Vipers managed to control the game effectively, showcasing their ability to impose their style and strike with precision when it mattered most. Their two victories so far—over Entebbe UPPC and now KCCA—highlight their resilience and strategic approach.
Key Moment: Okello’s Decisive Goal
The decisive goal came in the 32nd minute when Allan Okello, a former KCCA player, capitalized on a mistake by Charles Lukwago. Lukwago spilled Yunus Sentamu’s shot, allowing Okello to score from close range. This goal proved to be the difference in a game that saw both teams display varying levels of attacking flair and defensive caution.
Vipers had other opportunities to extend their lead, including a missed chance by Milton Karisa from Ashraf Mandela’s cross. However, the visitors were also forced to make crucial clearances, such as Herbert Achayi’s intervention to deny Usama Arafat. On the other hand, KCCA’s best effort came from Emmanuel Anyama, whose header was easily handled by Alfred Mudekereza.
KCCA’s Struggles Exposed
After the final whistle, KCCA manager Jackson Magera acknowledged his team’s shortcomings. He admitted that poor defense allowed Vipers to score and that his side failed to capitalize on their chances. Magera also noted that his team struggled to understand Vipers’ tactics in the first half but improved in the second half.
Despite the loss, KCCA remains at the top of the table with 11 points from six matches, level with Police. However, this defeat has exposed their vulnerabilities, particularly a shaky backline and inconsistent tactical discipline.
With an upcoming crucial match against URA at Lugogo, KCCA must rally their core players to perform under pressure. Magera will need to refine his lineup selections if they are to maintain a genuine title challenge.
SC Villa Rise as Strong Contenders
Away from Kitende, SC Villa demonstrated their potential to challenge the champions. Under Zeljko Kovacevic, the record 16-time winners edged out Kitara 1-0 thanks to Frank Ssebufu’s 66th-minute header. This victory marked Villa’s third consecutive win, lifting them to third place with 10 points from five matches.
Villa’s performance has been consistent, with a solid defense, composed midfield, and clinical attacks. Their next test comes when they host Nec at Kadiba after the international break. Meanwhile, Bul suffered a draw against Nec, with Joseph Dhata opening the scoring before Jerome Kiirya equalized in stoppage time. The result saw Bul drop to fourth on 10 points, level with Villa.
