Hamilton criticizes F1 Mexico GP penalty: ‘Lack of transparency and accountability’

Lewis Hamilton Expresses Frustration Over Formula 1 Stewarding Decisions

Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has voiced his dissatisfaction with the lack of clarity surrounding Formula 1 stewarding decisions, particularly after being penalized during the Mexico Grand Prix. The incident left him feeling aggrieved and questioning the fairness of the rulings.

During a prolonged battle with Max Verstappen on lap 6, Hamilton received a 10-second penalty for going off the road at Mexico’s Turn 4. The decision was based on the claim that he gained a “lasting advantage” by taking an alternative route through a low-grip runoff area. This penalty ultimately pushed Hamilton behind a group of cars during his pit stop, causing him to drop out of contention for a top-four finish.

Hamilton maintained that he did not gain any advantage from the off-track maneuver, but he was puzzled by the fact that Verstappen had also gone through the grass at the previous corner, which directly led to the confrontation at Turn 4. He found it inconsistent that only he was penalized for such incidents.

Hamilton’s teammate, Charles Leclerc, also experienced an off-track moment on the opening lap. Despite this, Leclerc managed to regain his position and remain ahead of Hamilton. Meanwhile, Verstappen ended up in fourth place between Hamilton and George Russell, the position he held when he was forced off the road at Turn 1.

When asked in Sao Paulo whether he had a clearer understanding of why he was punished, Hamilton responded: “Not particularly. There isn’t any clarity, and I think that’s probably part of the big issue. Transparency and accountability.”

He further criticized the secrecy surrounding the decision-making process, stating: “The secrecy that the decisions are made in the background, I think it’s something that definitely needs to be tackled. That’s probably something that needs to be done in the background, I would imagine.”

Hamilton also referenced his traumatic 2021 Abu Dhabi title loss, noting: “I don’t know if they’re aware of the weight of their decisions. Ultimately, decisions can decide the results of championships, as you’ve seen in the past. Some work needs to be done there, I’m sure.”

Both Hamilton and Verstappen were cleared for trading glancing blows through Turn 1, an incident that eventually led to their battle through Turns 3 and 4, culminating in Hamilton’s costly off-track moment.
