Jollof Festival Honors Local Cuisine and Heritage – Organizers

Celebrating African Unity Through Food: The Firewood Jollof Festival Returns

The Firewood Jollof Festival is set to make a significant return in 2025, with its second edition aiming to highlight Nigeria’s rich food heritage and foster stronger cultural ties across Africa. Themed “Unifying African Jollof,” the festival will take place on 29 November at Samui Okola Park in Lagos, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The event has grown beyond just a celebration of cuisine; it has become a cultural movement that brings together Africans and the diaspora through the shared love of Jollof rice. Chizoma Chukwueke, Founder and CEO of Firewood Jollof, emphasized this point in a statement, noting that the festival was inspired by the traditional cooking methods of her childhood.

“The smoky, earthy taste from the firewood is part of our heritage. We’re here to preserve the original essence of this iconic dish,” she said.

This year’s edition, dubbed Firewood Jollof 2.0, promises to be “bigger, better, and more immersive.” The festival aims to unite Africa through its common passion for Jollof, which is more than just a meal—it’s a symbol of cultural identity and pride.

One of the most anticipated features of the 2025 edition will be the unveiling of a special dish called West African Jollof. This unique creation will blend cooking traditions and ingredients from Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, and Kenya, showcasing the diversity and unity of African culinary practices.

A Festival for All

The festival will offer a wide range of activities for attendees, including celebrity appearances, live performances, cooking competitions, a kids’ fun zone, and experience areas supported by corporate sponsors. Access Bank has been named the official sponsor for the 2025 edition, while Devon Kings Oil, MTN Nigeria, and Nestlé Pure Life serve as partners.

Chizoma Chukwueke praised Access Bank’s support, highlighting how the festival provides a platform for small businesses to showcase their products, connect with customers, and generate revenue.

“This festival provides a platform for small businesses to showcase their products, connect with customers, and generate revenue. Access Bank is holding our hands through it all,” she said.

Chibuzor Chukwueke, the Marketing Director of Firewood Jollof, noted that the festival is driving both food tourism and entrepreneurship. Last year, approximately 35 small-scale businesses participated, and the team hopes to double that number this year.

“When you have small businesses networking, selling, and growing, you’re already contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth,” he said.

The organizers also expect over 20,000 attendees and participation from chefs across West Africa. Plans are already underway to expand the festival beyond Lagos, with hints of taking it interstate and even to another African country, or possibly London.

Partnerships and Experiences

Voke Emeje, Assistant Brand Manager of Devon Kings, spoke about the brand’s collaboration with Firewood Jollof, which aligns with their values of bringing people together through food.

“Firewood Jollof is about uniting people through food, and that aligns perfectly with our brand positioning — Taste That Binds. We want to help build memories through shared experiences,” she said.

Devon Kings plans to create a rich brand experience at the festival through product sampling, games, and giveaways. Attendees can look forward to a day filled with food, games, prizes, and a lot of fun.

“There’ll be food, games, prizes, and a lot of fun. We want everyone to feel nourished, both physically and emotionally,” she added.

A Growing Legacy

Since its debut in 2024, the Firewood Jollof Festival has continued to position Nigerian cuisine as a symbol of unity, heritage, and creative expression across Africa. With each edition, the festival not only celebrates the flavors of the continent but also reinforces the idea that food can be a powerful tool for cultural connection and economic growth.

As the 2025 edition approaches, the anticipation is building for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of African identity and tradition.
