Museveni’s Plan to Transform Mineral-Rich Village into Industrial Hub

President Museveni’s Vision for Manafwa District

President Yoweri Museveni, the long-standing leader of Uganda and the presidential candidate of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, has unveiled a new initiative aimed at transforming the Manafwa District. During a recent rally in Bugobero Town Council, he announced that if re-elected in the 2026 General Election, his administration will establish an industrial park in Butiru Town Council, specifically in the village of Namekhala. This move is expected to create numerous job opportunities for the youth and boost the local economy.

The area is known for its rich deposits of vermiculite, a mineral with significant industrial applications. Mining activities have been ongoing in Namekhala for about a decade, and the region is believed to have some of the world’s most valuable vermiculite reserves. The mineral is widely used in various sectors such as construction, agriculture, horticulture, and industry. Products containing vermiculite include potting soil mixes, insulation materials, and packing solutions.

During his speech, President Museveni emphasized the importance of vermiculite, stating that it plays a crucial role in fire control during the production of strong vehicles and satellites. He expressed optimism about the potential of the Manafwa Industrial Park, envisioning it as a “town of industries” that will drive economic growth and provide sustainable employment.

Economic Development and Infrastructure Projects

In addition to the proposed industrial park, President Museveni highlighted several other achievements of his government, particularly in the realm of economic development. He mentioned the establishment of the Mbale Industrial Park, which was commissioned in 2018 with a total investment of $600 million (Shs2.08 trillion). The park spans 619 acres and currently produces a wide range of goods, including glass, textiles, household detergents, baby diapers, and clothing. This project has created numerous jobs for the youth, reducing the need for importing these products.

Another key initiative under his leadership is the Lukhonge Skilling Hub in Mbale District. As part of 18 vocational hubs across the country, this facility offers free vocational training in skills such as carpentry, tailoring, and other practical trades. Many Ugandans have benefited from these programs, gaining the ability to become self-employed and contribute to the economy.

Challenges and Criticisms

Despite these developments, some voters have voiced concerns about unfulfilled promises. The Daily Monitor reported that several individuals expressed disappointment with President Museveni over pledges that have not materialized. One major issue raised is the lack of long-term solutions for natural disasters such as landslides. Additionally, those involved in agricultural trade criticized the absence of scanners at the Lwakhakha border in Namisindwa, where goods are often offloaded from trucks and inspected on the ground, leading to damage to agricultural products.

Mr. James Walimbwa, a local resident, pointed out that the 25.8km Bududa-Bubulo circular road, which connects Manafwa, Bududa, and Namisindwa districts, remains in poor condition. This road was not included in the national budget allocation for the 2025/2026 financial year, prompting district leaders and residents to launch a “no road, no vote” campaign. They demand clear plans for its repair.

Mr. Kamoti Wilson Wasunguyi, the former chairperson of Bududa District, attributed his loss in the NRM party primaries to the government’s failure to address the road issue. He acknowledged the public’s decision to vote him out, as they questioned why the road had not been tarmacked despite being part of the President’s manifesto.

Future Prospects and Public Engagement

As President Museveni continues his campaign across the Bugisu Sub-region, his vision for the Manafwa District remains a central theme. The proposed industrial park, along with existing projects like the Mbale Industrial Park and vocational training hubs, reflects his commitment to economic growth and job creation. However, addressing the concerns of the electorate will be crucial for maintaining support in the upcoming election.

Public engagement and transparency in addressing infrastructure and development issues will play a vital role in shaping the future of the region. With ongoing discussions and demands from the community, the government faces the challenge of balancing ambitious projects with the immediate needs of the people.
