Samia Begins Five-Year Term

New Leadership in Tanzania

Samia Suluhu Hassan has been officially sworn in as the President of Tanzania, following her victory in the recent election. The ceremony took place in Chamwino, located in the capital city of Dodoma, two days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared her the winner.

During the election held on October 29, Samia received a total of 31 million votes, which accounted for 97.6 percent of the total votes cast. This overwhelming majority highlighted her strong support among the electorate.

However, the country experienced significant unrest following the election, with violent protests erupting in various parts of Tanzania. Reports indicated that several people were killed during these incidents. In her speech during the swearing-in ceremony, President Suluhu acknowledged that some of the protestors came from outside the country, suggesting external influences on the domestic situation.

President Suluhu made history by becoming the first female president to take the oath of office in Tanzania. She initially assumed the presidency in the previous administration after the passing of former President John Magufuli.

The swearing-in ceremony attracted several regional leaders, including President Evariste Ndashimiye of Burundi, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema, and Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo. Their presence underscored the significance of the event and the importance of regional solidarity.

Kenya’s President William Ruto extended his congratulations to President Suluhu, emphasizing the historical ties between Kenya and Tanzania. He also highlighted their shared aspirations for the prosperity and stability of their citizens. Nairobi was represented at the ceremony by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

As the current chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), President Ruto urged the opposition, which has expressed dissatisfaction with the election outcome, to engage in dialogue for the benefit of all Tanzanians and the region. His message called for unity, peace, and the rule of law.

“I call upon the patriotic people of Tanzania to uphold peace and the rule of law, and I encourage all the political actors and stakeholders to embrace dialogue and tolerance as they seek to resolve any issues at hand in order to safeguard democracy and stability,” President Ruto said.

Regional Implications

The swearing-in of President Samia Suluhu Hassan marks a pivotal moment for Tanzania and the broader East African region. Her leadership is expected to bring new perspectives and approaches to governance, particularly given her historic role as the first female president.

The presence of regional leaders at the ceremony reflects the importance of regional cooperation and mutual support. It also signals a commitment to maintaining stability and fostering development across the East African Community.

As Tanzania moves forward under President Suluhu’s leadership, the focus will likely be on addressing the challenges posed by the post-election unrest and ensuring inclusive and equitable growth. The emphasis on dialogue and tolerance, as highlighted by President Ruto, is crucial for building a resilient and united nation.
