A Church and Police Partnership to Combat Drug Abuse Among Schoolchildren
The Family Covenant Church has partnered with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Narcotics Department to tackle drug abuse among schoolchildren. This initiative, titled “Yes to Jesus, No to Drugs,” has already reached over 35 schools in Bulawayo.
The campaign began during one of the church’s monthly youth meetings, led by Pastor Eunice Muzhari. During these sessions, boys and girls aged nine to 16 were taught life skills and spiritual values. Muzhari shared that the initial focus was on the girls, and the following week, the boys were also engaged. However, what they discovered was alarming.
“We met the girls first, then the following week the boys, and were shocked to discover that they knew the names, prices, and effects of drugs,” said Muzhari, who is also the founder of Family Covenant Church. “That’s when we realized we had to take action.”
The campaign has since expanded across various areas, including Msiteli, Northlea, Sobukazi, and more than 35 schools in Bulawayo. The response from students and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive.
Victor Garai, the headboy at Gifford High, described the campaign as life-changing. “Even though not everyone seemed interested at first, I know those who received Jesus will never be the same again,” he said.
Dumisani Nyathi, a Form 3 student at Sikhulile High, shared his personal experience. “I have learned to build a stronger relationship with God and stay away from bad friends,” he said.
Muzhari expressed his hope to expand the initiative to every school in Bulawayo and eventually across Zimbabwe. He emphasized the importance of faith and guidance in making positive life choices.
“A decision is the beginning when Jesus guides your life, the outcome will always be the best, and I do not regret starting this mission. It has given me purpose,” he said.
