TETFund Plans to Establish Fire Stations in Public Universities
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced plans to set up fire stations within public universities across Nigeria. This initiative aims to enhance fire safety and protect critical national assets located in higher education institutions.
Arch. Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, shared this information during a courtesy visit by the Comptroller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Mr. Samuel Olumode Adeyemi, in Abuja. Echono praised the Federal Fire Service for its commitment to safeguarding lives and property. He described the visit as timely and strategic, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the two organizations.
Echono emphasized that TETFund’s primary responsibility is to provide infrastructure for teaching, learning, and research in federal and state-owned tertiary institutions. He noted that the value of these assets is in the trillions of naira, making their preservation crucial.
He stated that proactive measures are necessary to protect these valuable resources. This includes installing fire protection devices such as hydrants, sprinklers, and smoke detectors. Additionally, training personnel to respond effectively to fire emergencies is essential.
Echono mentioned that there have been two fire incidents on campus in the past year. These events led to a comprehensive inspection of electrical installations and facilities. He stressed the importance of prevention over reaction, stating that the collaboration with the Fire Service is aimed at achieving this goal.
The TETFund boss also revealed that discussions are underway to formalize the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement will cover areas such as staff training, risk assessment, and institutional safety audits.
Federal Fire Service Highlights Recent Challenges
Earlier, the Comptroller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Adeyemi, commended TETFund for its contributions to the development of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. He described the Fund’s infrastructure projects as monumental and transformative.
Adeyemi highlighted that several fire incidents have occurred in universities across the country, resulting in significant property damage and, in some cases, loss of life. In 2024 alone, fires broke out in three federal universities, including hostels where about 29 rooms were destroyed and several students lost their lives. This, he said, underscores the need for stronger collaboration with TETFund.
Adeyemi proposed the installation of fire defense equipment such as smoke detectors, alarm systems, and extinguishers in all new and existing structures funded by TETFund. He also suggested the establishment of a joint inspection unit to conduct regular fire safety assessments of public tertiary institutions.
He emphasized the need for fire stations in universities and colleges of education to enable rapid response to emergencies. The Federal Fire Service is prepared to deploy personnel and trucks around the clock to protect these institutions. Adeyemi also expressed openness to training collaborations and the development of the six existing training schools into research and capacity-building centers.
Collaborative Efforts for Safer Campuses
The collaboration between TETFund and the Federal Fire Service represents a significant step towards ensuring safer environments for students, staff, and university assets. By combining TETFund’s infrastructure support with the Fire Service’s expertise, the initiative aims to prevent future fire incidents and improve emergency response capabilities.
This partnership not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also sets a precedent for long-term strategies in fire management within educational institutions. With the planned fire stations and enhanced training programs, the hope is to create a culture of safety and preparedness across Nigerian universities.
As the MoU is finalized, both organizations are expected to work closely on implementing these measures. This effort reflects a shared commitment to protecting lives and preserving the valuable resources of Nigeria’s higher education system.
