Police arrest tomb trespasser

Unveiling the Incident at Kasubi Tombs

A male suspect is currently being held at Old Kampala Police Station following an alleged attempt to access the Kasubi Tombs complex by scaling the perimeter wall using a wooden ladder. The incident has raised concerns about the security of this culturally significant site, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Owoyesigyire, confirmed the arrest on Friday, November 7, without providing specific details. He mentioned that the detainee, whose name was not disclosed, was found in possession of a matchbox and a container suspected to contain flammable liquid at the time of his arrest.

“We have a suspect in our custody in connection with the incident in Kasubi trading centre. We shall release the details as soon as our investigators file the report,” Owoyesigyire stated during a telephone interview.

In addition to the investigation, a security source revealed that the suspect will undergo a medical checkup to assess his mental status. This step is crucial in determining whether the individual had the capacity to understand the nature of his actions.

Historical Significance of Kasubi Tombs

The reported attempt to illegally access Kasubi Tombs brings back painful memories of the March 16, 2010, fire that destroyed the main mausoleum known as Muzibu Azaala Mpanga. This structure, originally built in 1884, was converted into Buganda’s royal burial ground, housing four royal tombs of former Buganda kings.

Despite the devastating fire, the Buganda Kingdom, the Ugandan Government, and UNESCO have collaborated to restore the cultural icon. However, the findings from the investigations into the fire outbreak have never been made public, leaving many questions unanswered.

Restoration Efforts and Future Plans

In May this year, Kano Takehiro, the Japanese Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, visited the complex and praised the collaborative restoration efforts. During his inspection, Anthony Wamala, the Buganda Minister for Tourism, informed the UNESCO team that the official launch of the reconstructed complex is scheduled for December 2025.

The Kasubi Tombs complex holds immense historical and cultural value, not only as a burial ground for the Buganda royal family but also as a symbol of the rich heritage of the region. The ongoing restoration efforts reflect a commitment to preserving this legacy for future generations.

Conclusion

The recent incident at Kasubi Tombs underscores the importance of maintaining robust security measures around such culturally significant sites. As the investigation continues, it is essential to ensure transparency and accountability. The restoration of the complex serves as a testament to the resilience and dedication of those involved in safeguarding Uganda’s heritage.
