Clutch Bags Seized Were Wife’s Gift, Says Party Rep

The Controversy Surrounding Luxury Clutch Bags Linked to Former First Lady

A recent development in the ongoing investigation into former first lady Kim Keon-hee has sparked public interest and debate. The special counsel team, led by Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki, reportedly seized luxury clutch bags from Kim’s home. This move has raised questions about the nature of the items and their significance in the broader context of the investigation.

The controversy took a new turn when People Power Party Representative Kim Gi-hyeon addressed the matter publicly. In a statement released on the 8th, he mentioned that his wife had gifted one of the clutch bags to Kim Keon-hee. According to Kim, this act was not motivated by any ulterior intent but rather as a gesture of social courtesy.

A Gesture of Social Courtesy

Kim explained that the gift occurred after he was elected as the leader of the People Power Party during the March 2023 convention. He stated that his wife presented the bag to the former first lady as a way to foster good relations between the ruling party leader and the president’s spouse.

He added that a simple memo with congratulatory remarks was included with the gift. The intention, according to Kim, was to ensure smooth cooperation between the party leader and the president in their respective roles.

No Deeper Meaning Behind the Gift

Representative Kim emphasized that neither he nor his wife had any requests for President Yoon Suk-yeol or his wife. He described the exchange as a ceremonial gesture, highlighting that it carried no deeper political or personal implications.

He further expressed concern over the direction of the special counsel’s investigation. Kim pointed out that the team has struggled to produce significant results and is now facing criticism over allegations involving Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki’s stock investment activities. He suggested that the current focus on the clutch bags might be an attempt to divert public attention from these issues.

Details of the Seizure

Earlier, the special counsel team confirmed that on the 6th, they conducted a raid at Kim Keon-hee’s residence in Acro Vista, Seocho-gu, Seoul. During the operation, two clutch bags from the French brand Roger Vivier were seized. These bags are believed to have been purchased for around 1,000,000 Korean won at the time.

The investigation is currently focused on whether Kim received the bags as compensation for alleged requests made by her or others. The case continues to unfold, with both political and legal implications that could impact the ongoing narrative surrounding the former first lady and the special counsel’s role in the process.
