FRSC Launches Fire Safety Drive in Oyo Communities

FRSC Launches 2025 Ember Months Campaign to Combat Distracted Driving in Oyo State

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo Sector Command, recently launched its 2025 Ember Months campaign against dangerous driving in the Akinleye Local Government Area of Oyo State. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about road safety and specifically target distracted driving, a growing concern on Nigerian roads.

The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including drivers’ unions, traditional and religious leaders, market associations, youth groups, security agencies, and other key players. The town hall meeting served as a platform for sensitization, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in ensuring road safety.

The theme of this year’s campaign was “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.” This message is part of a broader effort by the FRSC to spread awareness about safe road usage at the grassroots level. The Ember Months campaign is an annual initiative that seeks to address the increased risk of accidents during periods of heightened traffic movement.

Mrs. Rosemary Alo, the FRSC Sector Commander in Oyo State, highlighted the significance of the campaign in her remarks. She explained that the term “ember months” refers to a period of increased human and vehicular activity, which often leads to more road accidents. According to her, most crashes are caused by human error, not supernatural or mysterious factors.

She pointed out that distracted driving has become one of the fastest-growing causes of preventable accidents. Activities such as using mobile phones, scrolling through social media, reading messages, recording videos, adjusting gadgets, eating, or arguing while driving can significantly impair a driver’s concentration and attention.

“Our message is simple and direct: If you must drive, you must focus your eyes on the road, your hands on the steering, and your mind on driving,” Mrs. Alo said.

As the lead agency responsible for road safety in Nigeria, the FRSC is intensifying its efforts through advocacy, visibility campaigns, patrol operations, and collaboration with various stakeholders. However, she stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility that requires collective action from all road users.

Mrs. Alo called on drivers, transport unions, fleet operators, community leaders, school authorities, religious organizations, media professionals, digital influencers, parents, and guardians to join the FRSC in promoting responsible road use and safe behavior.

Addressing the Dangers of Distracted Driving

Mr. Adeleke Adeokun, the Guest Lecturer at the event, warned that crashes caused by distracted driving can have severe consequences. These include physical disabilities or even death, legal repercussions, financial burdens, and psychological trauma that can lead to long-term emotional distress.

He emphasized the importance of parental involvement in educating young drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. Parents should lead by example and engage their children in conversations about the responsibilities that come with driving.

Mr. Adeokun also urged educators and employers to use their platforms to promote the campaign against distracted driving in schools and workplaces. He outlined the best practices for defensive driving, including paying attention to surroundings, maintaining a reasonable speed, keeping a safe following distance, avoiding distractions, and not relying on other drivers.

Community Support and Collaborative Efforts

The Alakinyele of Akinleye, Oba James Odeniran, who was represented by Chief Alabi Oyeyemi, praised the efforts of the FRSC personnel and special marshals. He acknowledged their dedication in reducing the number of road accidents in the council area and throughout Oyo State.

The event featured a series of lectures, safety tips, question-and-answer sessions, and goodwill messages from representatives of various government agencies, including the Red Cross, special marshals, and the National Orientation Agency (NOA).

A Call for Collective Action

The FRSC’s 2025 Ember Months campaign underscores the critical need for a united approach to road safety. By focusing on distracted driving, the initiative aims to reduce preventable accidents and save lives. The success of this campaign depends on the active participation of all road users, from drivers and parents to educators and policymakers.

As the FRSC continues its efforts to promote safe driving habits, it is clear that the fight against road accidents requires more than just regulations—it demands awareness, education, and a shared commitment to making the roads safer for everyone.
