Kenya’s President Calls for Release of Kenyans Detained in Ukraine
President William Ruto has raised concerns about the detention of Kenyans in Ukraine, urging the country to take action to ensure their release. This appeal came during a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where Ruto expressed deep concern over reports that young Kenyans may have been lured into joining the Russia-Ukraine war under false pretenses.

The issue has sparked growing worries about the spread of foreign recruitment networks targeting African youth. These groups often use deceptive methods to entice individuals into participating in conflicts, sometimes leading to serious consequences for the victims.
During the call, Ruto emphasized Kenya’s commitment to ensuring the safety and return of its citizens. He urged Zelenskyy to cooperate in dismantling illegal recruitment channels and protecting vulnerable youth from exploitation.
Zelenskyy responded positively, pledging to investigate the matter and take necessary steps to secure the release of any detained Kenyans. In a statement shared on X on Thursday, November 6, Ruto expressed his appreciation for Zelenskyy’s assurance.
“I have had a fruitful phone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine, and discussed various issues of mutual interest between our two peoples and countries. I have requested President Zelensky to facilitate the release of any Kenyan in Ukrainian custody. I am grateful to His Excellency for acceding to my appeal,” Ruto stated.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Both leaders agreed to deepen ties through humanitarian, economic, and food security cooperation. This collaboration is set to be highlighted ahead of the Ukraine Food Summit, which aims to bring together nations to discuss food security and other partnerships.
Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to maintaining constructive ties with Ukraine, emphasizing that food resilience and global cooperation remain at the core of Kenya’s foreign policy.
Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude for Kenya’s continued support amid what he described as Russia’s “criminal war.” He confirmed that both countries would strengthen cooperation through their respective ministries and maintain dialogue on humanitarian and economic issues.
Addressing the Abduction of Ukrainian Children
In addition to discussing the plight of Kenyans, the leaders addressed the issue of Ukrainian children being abducted and deported by Russia. Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine is preparing to submit a resolution to the United Nations condemning this act.
He said he was thankful for Kenya’s backing on the matter, a move that further deepens Kenya’s diplomatic stance at the UN.
“I had a productive conversation with President of Kenya William Ruto. I informed him about Russia’s attacks on people and infrastructure, and I am grateful for his warm words of support. We touched upon the issue of Russia’s recruitment of foreign citizens into its criminal war. We are aware of all the fraudulent methods being used and will work more closely to put an end to them. We also discussed our bilateral relations and joint projects. Our teams will continue working on them. We paid special attention to the issue of Ukrainian children. This month, at the United Nations, Ukraine will submit a resolution condemning Russia’s illegal abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children. I am grateful that we can count on Kenya’s support,” Zelenskyy stated.
