Global Efforts to Maintain Nigeria’s Polio-Free Status
Rotary International has emphasized the importance of sustained efforts to maintain Nigeria’s polio-free status, highlighting that the country remains at risk until the virus is eradicated globally. Despite Africa being certified as polio-free five years ago, experts warn that continued vaccination is essential to prevent a resurgence.
During a Community Dialogue and Joint Partners Health Outreach in Gwarinpa Village, Abuja, Holger Knaack, Chairman of the Rotary Foundation Board, stressed the critical role of vaccination in protecting children from polio. He pointed out that while Nigeria has made significant progress, the presence of polio cases in Pakistan and Afghanistan means that the fight is not yet over.
Knaack explained that every newborn in Nigeria must receive polio immunization to ensure long-term protection against the disease. He also noted that Nigeria plays a central role in Rotary’s global health initiatives due to its large population and extensive health needs.
Key Health Initiatives in Nigeria
Rotary International is currently implementing three major interventions in Nigeria:
- Polio Eradication Campaign: This initiative focuses on ensuring widespread vaccination coverage and monitoring for any signs of the virus.
- Together for Healthy Families: A program aimed at reducing maternal and child deaths through improved healthcare access and education.
- Rotary Healthy Community Challenge: This effort targets diseases such as malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia by promoting community-based health solutions.
These programs are part of a broader strategy to improve public health outcomes and strengthen the resilience of local communities.
Philanthropy and Progress in Maternal and Child Health
Dr Ijeoma Pearl Okoro, Trustee of the Rotary Foundation, highlighted the impact of the organization’s maternal and child health initiatives. She mentioned that the program has led to a 28% reduction in mortality rates across four pilot states—Ekiti, Nasarawa, Gombe, and the FCT—in just three years. The initiative is set to expand to ten additional states next year.
Okoro emphasized the importance of collaboration with local communities, traditional leaders, and health workers. She also called for increased public awareness campaigns to maintain high immunity levels and prevent future outbreaks.
The Importance of Continued Vigilance
Despite the absence of wild polio virus in Nigeria, Okoro reminded attendees that the virus still exists in other parts of the world. “Polio anywhere is polio everywhere,” she said, urging everyone to remain vigilant and continue supporting immunization efforts.
The Village Head of Gwarinpa, Alhaji Umar Bayaro, pledged ongoing support for immunization drives and encouraged residents to take advantage of the services available at Oprima Health Care Centre.
Long-Term Commitment to Global Health
Rotary International has been leading the global fight against polio for over three decades, working closely with organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This partnership has been instrumental in achieving significant milestones in the battle against the disease.
As the world moves closer to eradicating polio, the role of local communities and international collaboration remains crucial. By maintaining strong immunization programs and addressing health challenges holistically, Nigeria can continue to protect its population and contribute to a healthier global future.
