A New Initiative for Girls and the Environment
In a significant move to tackle menstrual health issues and promote environmental sustainability, TexStyles Ghana Ltd (TSG), commonly known as GTP, has partnered with several organizations to launch the Pure Pad pilot project. This initiative is aimed at supporting girls in underprivileged communities while also reducing textile waste.
The Concept of the Pure Pad Project
The Pure Pad pilot project introduces reusable sanitary pads made from 100% cotton fabric sourced from TSG’s post-production off cuts. These pads are designed to empower young girls, address period poverty, and reduce the environmental impact of textile waste. Through this initiative, 2,500 young girls in deprived communities will receive the reusable pads, while 50 local micro-enterprises, including church groups, women’s cooperatives, and other community organizations, will be trained to manufacture them. Additionally, 40 tonnes of textile off cuts will be diverted from landfills, showcasing a commitment to both social and environmental causes.
Key Partners and Stakeholders
The launch event took place on October 5th at the Grace Presbyterian Church in Akropong, bringing together all the partners and stakeholders. Attendees included Hon. Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide and Advisor to President John Dramani Mahama and Board Chair of Landfills2Landmarks, Samuel Awuku, MP for Akuapim North Constituency, Mrs. Jane Savage, CEO of Pure Amore Pads, UK, Jonathan Sait, CEO of Sait Recycling, the Queen Mother of Akropong, and Mr. Samuel Ofori-Gyampoh, Co-Founder of Landfills2Landmarks, among others.
TSG’s Commitment to Social Responsibility
Representing TSG, Mr. Reuben Sam, Marketing Manager of the GTP brand, emphasized how the initiative aligns with the brand’s purpose. He stated, “Everything we do is driven by one goal: to give women the confidence to take life on. This initiative will help keep the girl child in school, giving them the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills to pursue their dreams. Providing the cotton fabrics for the production of this reusable sanitary pad is our way of offering freedom, dignity, and confidence to all the beneficiaries.”
Impact and Future Goals
With the launch of Pure Pad, TSG continues to demonstrate its dedication to corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability. The initiative not only addresses the immediate needs of girls in underprivileged communities but also contributes to a broader conversation about the importance of sustainable practices in everyday life.
Conclusion
The Pure Pad pilot project represents a powerful combination of social empowerment and environmental stewardship. By providing reusable sanitary pads, TSG and its partners are making a tangible difference in the lives of young girls while also working towards a more sustainable future. This initiative serves as a model for other organizations looking to create positive change through innovative and responsible practices.
