Police Brutality Strikes Lounge Owner in Osun

A Disturbing Incident of Police Brutality in Osogbo

A troubling incident involving police brutality has come to light in Osogbo, Osun State. Adekunle Ayomide, a lounge owner, reported that he was brutally beaten by officers from the anti-robbery squad of the Osun State Police Command. The event unfolded after a minor disagreement between one of his female employees and a police officer, leading to a severe confrontation that left Adekunle physically and emotionally traumatized.

The Incident Unfolds

The trouble began last Friday when Adedokun Yusuf, the second-in-command of the anti-robbery squad, visited the lounge. During his visit, he had a sharp disagreement with one of the female employees over a seemingly trivial issue. Adekunle, who was overseeing the operations of his establishment, rushed to the scene. He instructed the other workers to return to their respective duty posts while trying to resolve the matter with the police, whom he initially believed were customers.

However, the situation escalated quickly. Infuriated by Adekunle’s instructions, the officers allegedly beat him severely, claiming that he was being disrespectful in front of them. This led to a series of events that left Adekunle in a state of shock and fear.

The Aftermath of the Attack

Adekunle described the harrowing experience in detail. He recounted how the officer, feeling humiliated that one of his workers had left his presence, vowed to teach him a harsh lesson. The officer then left and made some calls, and shortly after, three men arrived in a pink-colored Toyota Corolla. One of them was wearing a police jacket. Yusuf pointed at Adekunle, and upon reaching his location, one of the men instructed him to sit on the floor, which he refused.

They then returned with a silver-colored Corolla car and insisted that Adekunle get into the vehicle. When he asked what his offense was, instead of explaining, he was bundled into the car and taken directly to the police command headquarters. Upon arrival, Yusuf took a cutlass, and one of his subordinates grabbed a large stick, beginning to hit Adekunle simultaneously. They instructed him to remove his clothes and lie on the floor. As he questioned the reason for this treatment, Yusuf continued to beat him with the cutlass fifteen times.

After the beating, Adekunle’s friends arrived and contacted an officer who facilitated his release around 6:30 pm.

Calls for Justice

The traumatized young man called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, to assist him in seeking justice. He emphasized the need for the said officer to explain his actions to the public. Adekunle expressed his frustration, stating that it was unfortunate that a law officer could annihilate him after coming to enjoy himself at his outlet and ended up dehumanizing him without any reason.

He pleaded with the authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly to ensure justice for him and prevent similar acts of injustice from occurring to others.

Official Response

When contacted, the Osun Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, stated that the command was aware of the incident and was currently investigating the said officer to uncover the truth. The response highlights the seriousness of the situation and the commitment to addressing such incidents.

This incident raises serious concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officials and the need for accountability. It also underscores the importance of protecting citizens from abuse of power and ensuring that justice is served. As the investigation continues, the community awaits a resolution that will restore trust in the police force and provide closure for Adekunle.
