Enhancing Corporate Governance and Transparency in Ghana
The Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA) recently organized a two-day seminar focused on promoting good corporate governance and transparency. This event aimed to support the development of the private sector by ensuring it is ethically grounded, operationally transparent, and competitive in both local and international markets.
Held in Accra, the seminar sought to equip employers and businesses with the necessary tools to implement effective corporate governance, transparency, and anti-bribery standards. A key component of the discussions centered around the ISO 37001 standard for Anti-Bribery Management Systems, which provides a framework for organizations to prevent, detect, and address bribery risks.
During the event, Mr. Alex Frimpong, CEO of GEA, emphasized the importance of the seminar in a time when the business landscape is rapidly evolving. He noted that enterprises are now expected to meet higher standards of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. “Investors, regulators, and consumers today demand more from businesses than just financial returns. They expect high levels of integrity and social responsibility,” he stated.
Mr. Frimpong also highlighted that good corporate governance and transparency are no longer just regulatory requirements but essential for business sustainability, investor confidence, and organizational reputation. These elements play a crucial role in building long-term success and trust among stakeholders.
Key Topics Discussed at the Seminar
Participants engaged in detailed discussions on various aspects of good governance and anti-bribery management systems. The sessions covered:
- The principles and requirements of ISO 37001
- Risk assessment methodologies
- Internal control frameworks
- Third-party due diligence and transparency mechanisms
These topics were explored through a combination of conceptual insights and practical tools that participants could directly apply within their organizations. The seminar was facilitated by GEA’s legal and industry experts, who provided valuable knowledge and guidance throughout the sessions.
At the conclusion of the two-day event, participants shared that they had developed concrete action plans tailored to their organization’s specific needs. These plans will guide the implementation of improved governance, anti-bribery, and transparency measures.
Ongoing Commitment to Improvement
The GEA emphasized that implementing these frameworks is an ongoing process of learning, adaptation, and improvement. Mr. Frimpong stated that the association, with the support of its partners, will continue to offer technical assistance and platforms like this seminar to help employers in Ghana benchmark their operations against international best practices.
The event received support from the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO), which has long been committed to strengthening Ghana’s private sector through knowledge exchange, ethical business development, and sustainable enterprise growth. Other key partners, including DNV Ghana, contributed technical expertise and professionalism, which were instrumental in the successful execution of the seminar.
Through such initiatives, the GEA and its partners are working to foster a culture of integrity and accountability in the Ghanaian business environment. By promoting good corporate governance and transparency, they aim to create a more competitive and responsible private sector that can thrive in both domestic and global markets.
