Pakistan and UK Strengthen Economic Ties Through Trade Dialogue
Pakistan and the United Kingdom have taken significant steps to enhance their economic partnership, focusing on expanding trade and fostering collaboration in deep technology and innovation. This development comes as part of a renewed effort to strengthen bilateral relations through structured dialogue and mutual growth opportunities.
During a recent meeting, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal engaged with UK’s Minister of State for Trade Policy Chris Bryant. The discussions centered around advancing Pakistan-UK economic cooperation under the recently signed Pakistan-UK Trade Dialogue Mechanism. According to a press statement, the meeting was described as productive and forward-looking.
Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the long-standing cultural and historical ties between Pakistan and the UK, stating that political relations are strong and now it is time to translate this into economic progress. “Our goal is to turn goodwill into growth,” he said, highlighting the importance of transforming existing relationships into tangible economic outcomes.
The current level of bilateral trade stands at £5.5 billion, which the minister acknowledged as only the beginning. He called for an aggressive expansion of trade volumes, stating that the Trade Dialogue Mechanism must act as a catalyst for unlocking the full economic potential of both nations. To achieve this, he stressed the need to operationalize the three working groups established under the mechanism quickly. “We cannot afford delays. The working groups must become operational immediately so our next ministerial meeting delivers concrete, measurable outcomes,” he added.
Chris Bryant welcomed the progress made and highlighted the significance of the Trade Dialogue Mechanism signed in July 2025. This framework includes annual ministerial engagements and mandates that the working groups become functional within six months. He also pointed out the importance of technical discussions on SPS measures and tariffs, emphasizing the role of subject-matter experts in developing practical solutions.
Bryant noted that Pakistan has made remarkable progress in reversing its economic downturn. Inflation is declining, and economic growth is recovering. “Pakistan is open for business like never before,” he stated, acknowledging the country’s growing potential in the IT and technology sectors.
“The greatest asset of Pakistan today is its young, highly skilled tech talent,” Bryant said. He identified multiple areas where Pak-UK collaboration could thrive, particularly in technological and scientific domains. “Deep technology collaboration between Pakistan and the UK can create a new bridge between our economies.”
Both sides also expressed interest in revitalizing joint business forums to encourage private-sector partnerships. Additionally, they discussed enhancing cultural cooperation in areas such as fashion and design, music and arts, and tourism. “Our cultural ties are a living bridge. Fashion, arts, design, and tourism can become powerful forces to bring our people even closer,” said Ahsan Iqbal.
In a gesture of goodwill, Ahsan Iqbal extended a formal invitation to Minister Chris Bryant to visit Pakistan, further strengthening the bonds between the two nations.
