INEC Official Collapses in Anambra Community

Election Day Chaos in Anambra

An incident during the Anambra governorship election on Saturday left many voters frustrated and confused. A presiding officer, Miss Blessing Egoigwe, fainted at polling unit 005 in Enugwu-Ukwu, located in the Njikoka Local Government Area. The event took place amidst a crowd of voters who were already upset due to the malfunctioning of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

The presiding officer was taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention. This incident added to the growing list of problems faced by voters at this particular polling unit. More than 470 voters were unable to cast their ballots because the BVAS system failed to recognize the voter cards of newly registered individuals. This technical glitch led to significant unrest among the electorate.

One of the affected voters, 18-year-old Miss Blessing Okoye, expressed her frustration at being turned away from the polling station. She was unable to have her fingerprint captured by the non-functional BVAS, which left her feeling demoralized. Okoye stated that her hope to vote for a candidate of her choice was dashed by INEC’s failure to provide a reliable system.

Mrs Ifeoma Iloeze, a 55-year-old voter, also shared her experience of waiting from morning until 6:29 p.m. due to the BVAS failing to capture her face. She described the situation as painful and urged the electoral body to consider alternative voting methods in future elections. Iloeze emphasized that it is sad to be denied the right to vote.

Technical Issues and Voter Frustration

NAN reports that an INEC technician was alerted to the situation and visited the polling unit. However, there was little improvement in the system’s performance. The issues with the BVAS not only affected new voters but also raised concerns about the accuracy of the voter registration process. Some dead voters were reportedly listed among the registered voters posted at the polling unit, further complicating the situation.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by the electoral commission in ensuring a smooth and efficient voting process. The reliance on technology such as the BVAS is essential, but it also comes with risks if not properly maintained or tested.

Calls for Improvement

Voters like Okoye and Iloeze are calling for improvements in the electoral system. They emphasize the need for a more robust and reliable method of voter accreditation. Alternative voting methods could be explored to ensure that all eligible voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots without facing unnecessary obstacles.

The situation at polling unit 005 underscores the importance of having backup systems in place. In the event of technical failures, there should be procedures to accommodate voters and prevent them from being disenfranchised. This is particularly crucial in an election where every vote carries significant weight.

Broader Implications

The issues encountered during the Anambra governorship election reflect broader concerns about the effectiveness of the electoral process in Nigeria. As the country continues to move towards a more transparent and inclusive democratic system, addressing these technical and procedural challenges is essential.

The experiences of voters at polling unit 005 serve as a reminder of the need for continuous evaluation and improvement of the electoral infrastructure. It is vital that the electoral commission takes these incidents seriously and implements necessary reforms to prevent similar situations in the future.
