CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif Unveils Special Programs for Persons with Disabilities

A New Era for Autistic Children in Punjab

In a significant move towards inclusivity, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has introduced a range of special initiatives aimed at supporting autistic children. These programs include free therapy, free books, free pick-and-drop services, and free meals for all enrolled students. This initiative marks a major step forward in ensuring that children with autism receive the care and education they deserve.

The first Board of Directors meeting of the Maryam Nawaz School and Resource Centre for Autism was held under the chairpersonship of Sania Ashiq, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Special Education. The board made several historic decisions focused on the welfare and rehabilitation of autistic children in Punjab. These decisions are expected to have a lasting impact on the lives of many families across the province.

It was decided that the Maryam Nawaz School and Resource Centre for Autism will become the first state-of-the-art government institution in Pakistan dedicated to the education and rehabilitation of autistic children. Following the Chief Minister’s vision, the school will offer world-class education and therapy services completely free of cost. This commitment to quality and accessibility is a testament to the government’s dedication to improving the lives of those with special needs.

The Board approved free uniforms and school meals for the students, along with a free pick-and-drop service provided by the government. These measures are designed to reduce the financial burden on families and ensure that all children can access the necessary resources for their education and well-being.

The facility will also include an open gym, sand therapy area, sensory garden, and walking track, all available to children free of charge. These amenities are essential in providing a holistic approach to the development and therapy of autistic children. They create an environment that encourages physical activity, sensory exploration, and emotional growth.

A Teacher Training and Research Resource Centre for autism will also be established within the school to ensure high-quality training and innovation in special education practices. This centre will play a crucial role in equipping educators with the skills and knowledge needed to support autistic children effectively.

The Board of Directors approved the initiation of admissions and staff recruitment on an urgent basis. In addition, evening shift therapy services will be introduced on a self-finance basis to expand accessibility. This decision ensures that more children can benefit from the services offered by the school, regardless of their schedules or financial constraints.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary Specialized Healthcare, Secretary Primary and Secondary Healthcare, and Secretary Education, while the Secretaries of Finance and Higher Education joined via video link. The presence of these key officials highlights the importance of the initiative and the government’s commitment to its success.

The Board members commended Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s visionary leadership and expressed gratitude for her unwavering commitment to the welfare of special children through the establishment of the Maryam Nawaz School and Resource Centre for Autism.
