Pakistan and Azerbaijan: Centuries of Cultural and Spiritual Bond

A Celebration of Brotherhood and Shared Values

A significant seminar titled “Azerbaijan-Pakistan Friendship: The Fifth Anniversary of Victory Day” took place in Islamabad, organized by the MUSLIM Institute and the Baku International Multiculturalism Centre. This event served as a tribute to Azerbaijan’s historic victory over Armenia. Notable participants included Ambassador Naela Chohan, former Acting Foreign Secretary of Pakistan; Dr. Taraq Waheed, former Director of the Foreign Services Academy in Islamabad; Samir Ahmedli, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Islamabad; Rear Admiral Syed Faisal Ali Shah Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military); and Asif Tanveer Awan, Research Associate at the MUSLIM Institute. The session was led by Dr. Abdul Basit.

During the seminar, speakers emphasized that diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Azerbaijan were formally established after Azerbaijan gained independence from the Soviet Union in October 1991. However, cultural and brotherly ties between the two nations date back centuries, rooted in deep and enduring connections. These relationships are not only political or civilizational but also based on shared spiritual and cultural values.

The speakers expressed their support for Azerbaijan’s principled position, especially regarding Armenian aggression, atrocities against the Azerbaijani people, and the Khojaly massacre. They highlighted Pakistan’s steadfast backing of Azerbaijan at international forums. In return, Azerbaijan has consistently supported Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir.

They recalled that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was one of the bloodiest chapters of the 20th century. In September 2020, following renewed Armenian aggression, a war broke out that lasted 44 days, ending with Azerbaijan’s decisive victory in November 2020.

The triumph was described as a testament to the courage, unity, and indomitable spirit of the Azerbaijani nation. The event also stressed the importance of honoring the martyrs of such struggles to foster unity and determination among nations. It was noted that challenging the narratives of oppression is essential so that the world can hear stronger voices against ongoing injustices in regions like Kashmir, Palestine, Gaza, and others.

Speakers reaffirmed that Pakistan and Azerbaijan are brotherly Islamic countries united by faith, solidarity, and mutual trust. Pakistan has always provided unconditional support to Azerbaijan without any vested interest.

They emphasized the need to enhance cooperation in education, trade, culture, and defense to strengthen bilateral relations in the years ahead.
